Making Connections: Your Guide to Setting Up a Google Meet Invite

In today's world, staying connected often means bridging distances, and sometimes, a quick chat just won't cut it. That's where video conferencing steps in, and Google Meet has become a go-to for many, myself included. Whether it's catching up with family when they're on the road or coordinating with colleagues across different time zones, it's remarkably straightforward once you know the ropes.

It might seem like a single, simple process, but Google Meet actually offers a few different paths to get your meeting set up. Let's break them down, shall we?

The Web App Approach

If you're at your computer, heading over to meet.google.com is your starting point. Once you're there, you'll spot a prominent "New meeting" button. Click that, and you'll see three handy options:

  • Create a meeting for later: This is perfect for planning. You get a link right away that you can copy and send to everyone who needs to be there. When it's time, just click that link to jump in.
  • Start an instant meeting: Need to connect now? This option kicks off a meeting immediately and puts you right in it. You'll get a link to share with others who can join.
  • Schedule in Google Calendar: This is where things get really organized. Clicking this will open up Google Calendar with a new event draft. You can fill in all the details – the topic, who's invited, and when – and then hit save. Later, when you open that calendar event, you'll see a "Join with Google Meet" button. (If you don't see it, a quick check in your Google Calendar settings to ensure video conferencing is enabled for new events usually does the trick.)

On Your Mobile Device

Don't worry, it's just as easy on your phone or tablet. Open the Google Meet app, and you'll find a "New" button, usually in the bottom right corner. Tap that, and you'll see similar choices:

• Create a new meeting: This is for immediate connections. You can then share the meeting link through your usual mobile sharing options or simply tap to copy it.
  • Schedule in Google Calendar: Just like on the web, this option opens your Google Calendar app. You can then add all the meeting specifics – name, time, attendees – and save it. The Google Meet link will be automatically included.

Leveraging Google Calendar

Honestly, Google Calendar is a powerhouse for scheduling, and it plays beautifully with Google Meet. By default, whenever you create a new event in Google Calendar, it automatically adds a Google Meet conference link. So, if you're already using Calendar:

  1. Go to calendar.google.com (or open the app).
  2. Click the "Create" button (or the '+' sign on mobile) and select "Event."
  3. Fill in your meeting details and add your guests.
  4. Hit "Save."

An invitation with the Google Meet link will be sent to everyone you've invited. They can just click the link in the email to join. If this automatic addition isn't happening for you, a quick peek into your Google Calendar settings should confirm that the "Automatically add Google Meet video conferences to events I create" box is checked. You can also add it manually to any event by clicking "Add Google Meet video conferencing."

From the Inbox: Gmail Integration

Did you know you can start or schedule a Meet directly from Gmail? First, you'll need to enable Meet within your Gmail settings. Look for the cog icon (Settings), then "Customize" under Chat and Meet, and check the box for Google Meet. Once that's done, you'll see a "Meet" option in the left sidebar.

Clicking "New meeting" here gives you the familiar options: copy the link to share, send an invite through other platforms, or "Join now" to start immediately and invite people as you go.

On mobile, it's a similar setup. In the Gmail app, go to Settings, tap "Meet," and toggle on "Show the Meet tab for video calling." Then, you'll see the Meet icon, usually in the bottom right, allowing you to create new meetings and get joining info to share.

No matter which method you choose, the goal is the same: making it as simple as possible to connect with the people who matter, wherever they are.
