Life's moments, big or small, often require us to bridge distances. Whether it's a quick check-in with a loved one on a work trip or a crucial team huddle, staying connected has never been more important. And when it comes to seamless video conferencing, Google Meet stands out as a remarkably user-friendly option. It's the kind of tool that feels intuitive, whether you're grabbing your phone or settling in at your computer.
But as with many things that seem simple, there are a few pathways to get a Google Meet meeting up and running. Let's explore them, shall we?
Starting a Meeting Right Now (or for Later) via the Web
If you're on your computer and want to dive in, heading over to meet.google.com is your first stop. Once you're there, you'll spot a prominent "New meeting" button. Clicking this opens up a trio of choices:
- Create a meeting for later: This is perfect for planning. You'll get a unique link that you can then share with everyone who needs to join. When the time comes, simply click that link, and you're in!
- Start an instant meeting: Need to connect now? This option launches a meeting immediately and brings you right into it. You'll get a link to share with others so they can join you.
- Schedule in Google Calendar: This is where things get really organized. Selecting this will whisk you over to Google Calendar, where a new event is prepped. You just need to fill in the meeting details, add your guests, and hit save. Later, when it's time to join, you'll find a "Join with Google Meet" button right within that calendar event.
Just a heads-up: if that "Join with Google Meet" button doesn't appear in your calendar event, a quick peek at your Google Calendar settings might be in order to ensure video conferencing is set to be added automatically.
On the Go: Setting Up Google Meet from Your Mobile
The mobile experience is wonderfully similar. Open up the Google Meet app on your phone, and you'll see a "New" button, usually tucked away in the bottom right corner. Tap that, and you'll find:
- Create a new meeting: This is for those spontaneous connections. You'll get a link that you can instantly share through your usual messaging apps or simply copy and paste.
- Schedule in Google Calendar: Just like on the web, this option opens your Google Calendar app. You can then add all the necessary details – the meeting's name, when it starts and ends, and who should be there – before saving it.
Integrating with Google Calendar: The Seamless Approach
Honestly, Google Calendar is a fantastic ally for scheduling Meet calls. In fact, by default, every time you create a new event in Google Calendar, it automatically adds a Google Meet link to it. So, if you're using calendar.google.com or the mobile app, simply create an event, add your attendees, and save. An invitation with the Meet link will be sent out automatically.
If you find this isn't happening, it's worth checking your Google Calendar settings to make sure the "Automatically add Google Meet video conferences to events I create" box is ticked. Alternatively, for any specific event, you can always manually click "Add Google Meet video conferencing."
From Your Inbox: Google Meet via Gmail
Did you know you can launch Google Meet directly from Gmail? First, you'll need to enable Meet within your Gmail settings. Look for the cog icon (Settings), then "Customize" under Chat and Meet, and check the box for Google Meet. Once that's done, you'll see a "Meet" option in the left sidebar.
Clicking "New meeting" here gives you the familiar choices: copy the link to share, send an invite through other platforms, or "Join now" to start the meeting immediately and invite people as you go.
On mobile, it's a similar setup. In the Gmail app, head to Settings, tap "Meet," and toggle on "Show the Meet tab for video calling." You'll then see a Meet icon, usually in the bottom right, allowing you to create new meetings with the same sharing options.
Ultimately, Google Meet offers a flexible and straightforward way to connect. Whether you're planning ahead or need to jump on a call instantly, there's a method that fits your workflow, making those important conversations just a click away.
