Your Window Into Your Child's College Journey: Navigating the Parent Portal

It's a feeling many parents know well: that gentle hum of curiosity about how your child is really doing at college. Are they attending classes? Are they keeping up? While you trust them to navigate their own path, having a clearer view can bring peace of mind and foster better communication. That's precisely where the Parent Portal steps in.

Think of it as your dedicated channel to stay informed. Designed to bridge the gap between home and college, this portal offers a direct line to key information about your child's academic life. You'll be able to see their study programme details, track attendance and punctuality, and keep an eye on important dates. It’s about empowering you with knowledge, not about micromanaging their experience.

Getting started is straightforward, but it does involve a few steps to ensure everything is secure and accurate. First, you'll need to register for a Parent Account online. This process is designed with security in mind. By authenticating your email address, we can be sure that information is reaching the right person. Crucially, it also helps confirm your connection to the student, safeguarding their data.

To register, you'll find a link to the online form. You'll need your child's Student ID number – usually found on their college card – and you'll be asked to state your relationship to them. You'll also create a password to keep your account secure. Once submitted, an automatic email will arrive, prompting you to verify your email address. Following that, the college team will manually cross-reference the details you've provided with their existing records. This verification step, which can take 1-3 days, is vital for protecting your child's information.

Once everything is confirmed, you'll receive a final email containing your username. With that, you're ready to log in! Accessing the portal is as simple as clicking the provided link, entering your username and the password you created, and hitting 'Login'. You'll then see a Home page displaying your child's name and photograph, a reassuring visual confirmation.

Clicking on your child's name opens up their specific record. Here's what you can expect to find:

  • Attendance and Punctuality: This section provides an overall percentage for attendance and punctuality across all their courses. The data is updated nightly from the main register system. While the system is generally up-to-date, there might be rare occasions where a tutor can't immediately update marks electronically, so a slight delay is possible.
  • Lesson Timetable: Need to know when and where classes are? You can access the lesson timetable by clicking on 'Information' and then 'Lesson Timetable' from the menu bar.

Should you have any questions about attendance, timetables, or how the portal works, your child's Student Learning Advisor (SLA) is your go-to person. For general inquiries or to contact a specific staff member, you can call 020 8326 2020 and ask for them directly, or use the email format firstname.surname@west-thames.ac.uk.

It's all about fostering a collaborative environment where you feel connected to your child's educational journey. The Parent Portal is a tool designed to make that connection smoother and more informed.
