Remember those days of staring at a blank Notepad screen, wrestling with words? For many of us, Notepad has been a trusty, no-frills companion for jotting down quick notes, to-do lists, or even drafting longer pieces. It’s the digital equivalent of a humble notepad, always there, always ready. But what if that familiar tool could do more? What if it could actively help you write better, faster, and with less friction?
Well, it turns out, it can. For those on the Windows Insider Program's Canary and Dev Channels, a significant upgrade has landed right inside Notepad itself. We're talking about AI-powered features – specifically, Rewrite, Summarize, and Write – all baked into this unassuming application, thanks to the magic of GPT.
Refining Your Thoughts with Rewrite
Let's say you've written something, but it feels a bit clunky, or maybe the tone isn't quite right. Instead of painstakingly rephrasing every sentence, you can now simply highlight the text. A quick right-click, a tap on the toolbar, or even a handy keyboard shortcut (Ctrl + D) brings up the Rewrite options. Need to make it sound more professional? Shorter? Longer? Or perhaps just clearer? Notepad can now offer you three different versions to choose from. It’s like having a friendly editor on standby, ready to polish your prose with just a click.
Distilling Information with Summarize
We've all been there – faced with a wall of text, a lengthy article, or pages of notes, and needing to grasp the core message quickly. This is where the Summarize feature shines. Highlight the text, access it via right-click, the Copilot menu, or Ctrl + M, and choose your desired summary length: short, medium, or long. In moments, you'll have a concise overview, pulling out the essential points. It’s incredibly useful for cutting through the noise and getting straight to the heart of the matter, saving you precious time and mental energy.
Generating New Ideas with Write
Perhaps the most exciting addition is the 'Write' feature. Imagine needing to draft an email, brainstorm ideas for a blog post, or even create a list of tips for a specific topic. With Write, you can do just that. Place your cursor where you want new content, or select existing text to provide context. Then, using the right-click menu, Copilot, or Ctrl + Q, you can enter a prompt. Describe what you need – "draft a friendly reminder about our upcoming meeting" or "generate travel tips for a weekend trip to the mountains" – and Notepad will generate relevant content. It can even use your selected text as a jumping-off point, ensuring the generated text flows naturally with what you've already written.
Getting Started and What You Need
It's important to note that these AI features are currently exclusive to Windows Insiders in the Canary and Dev Channels. To use them, you'll need to be signed in with your Microsoft account. This is because the AI features are powered by a cloud service that requires authentication. Your Microsoft account also manages your AI credits, which are necessary for generating content. If you're not keen on using these AI tools, you can easily turn them off in Notepad's settings.
For those who use Microsoft 365 Personal or Family subscriptions, you get a generous 60 AI credits per month, automatically replenished. Copilot Pro subscribers enjoy even more extensive usage. You can keep an eye on your credit balance through your profile menu, and you'll get notifications when you're running low. If you happen to use up your monthly credits, there's an option to purchase additional ones through Copilot Pro.
A Smarter Notepad for Everyone
This integration of AI into a tool as fundamental as Notepad feels like a significant step forward. It’s not about replacing human creativity, but about augmenting it, making the writing process smoother and more efficient. Whether you're a student, a professional, or just someone who likes to keep their thoughts organized, these new AI capabilities in Notepad offer a glimpse into a future where even our simplest tools are empowered to help us communicate more effectively.
