Your Compass for Starting Strong: Navigating the New Hire Journey

Stepping into a new role can feel like embarking on an adventure, and a little preparation goes a long way in making that journey smooth and exciting. For those joining the University of Denver, there's a structured, yet welcoming, process designed to get you acquainted and settled.

Think of your new hire orientation as your initial briefing. Within your first month, you'll receive an email with a link to enroll. You can choose how you want to learn – in person, remotely, or at your own pace. Just a heads-up: if you opt for the self-paced route, make sure you have access to DU systems first, which usually happens within 24 hours of your start date.

What does a typical orientation day look like? It's often split into two parts. The morning session, usually from 9:30 am to 11:00 am, is a broad introduction to DU, featuring insights from key departments like Financial Services, the ADA team, and IT. Following that, from 11:00 am to noon, you might get a campus tour – a virtual option is available too! Lunch is provided, a nice chance to connect. The afternoon, from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm, dives deeper into campus safety, an HR overview, and benefits. If you're not eligible for benefits, you'll only need to attend the morning session. If questions pop up, the Employee Onboarding team at EmployeeOnboarding@du.edu is there to help.

Before you even set foot on campus, there are a few crucial steps. The I-9 verification is a legal requirement for all new employees. You'll need to provide acceptable documentation, like a passport or driver's license, and upload it through HireRight. After that, Employment Services will reach out to schedule a time to verify your documents, either virtually or in person. If you're unsure about what documents are needed, the USCIS website is a great resource, or you can contact Employment Services directly via email or phone (303-871-7993).

Then there's My4D, DU's internal portal. Once you log in using your DU email and password (IT Support at 303-871-4700 can help if you have trouble), you'll find a list of action items. This is where you'll complete your employee profile, set up direct deposit for payroll and expense reimbursements, fill out your W-4 tax form, sign up for electronic W-2 delivery, register for critical incident notifications, and provide emergency contact info. Don't forget to sign any confidentiality or patent agreements too!

Getting around campus is also part of the picture. Parking at DU is permit or fee-based; there's no free parking. You'll want to check out the Parking website for details on permits and fees, or visit their office. For those using public transport, the University of Denver Station for RTD bus and light rail is conveniently located.

Your first day and week are about getting your essentials. Your DU ID card is your official pass around campus, needed for building access. You'll need to submit for one online or visit the DU ID office. And of course, enrolling in benefits is a key step for those who qualify. It’s all about building a solid foundation for your time at DU.
