It’s funny how quickly time flies, isn't it? Thinking back to the Wii U, it feels like just yesterday we were all buzzing about its potential. For those of us who were eagerly awaiting its arrival, the release dates were a hot topic. The console itself, recognized as the first 'eighth' generation system and the successor to the beloved Wii, officially landed in North America on November 18, 2012. Europe and Australia followed shortly after on November 30, 2012, with Japan rounding out the initial launch on December 8, 2012. These dates were first revealed during a Nintendo press conference on September 13, 2012, sparking a wave of anticipation.
When it first hit the shelves, you could grab a Wii U console with a GamePad, 8GB of storage, an HDMI cable, Wii Sensor bar, and AC adapter for around $299.99 in the US. There were also bundled options, like the Deluxe Set, which offered more storage, charging cradles, stands, the Nintendo Land game, and a premium subscription for $349.99. It was quite the package, especially with the innovative GamePad featuring its own touchscreen.
Of course, the excitement wasn't just about the hardware. Gamers were always keen to know what software would be available. Looking at the early days, we saw titles like 'Human Resource Machine' announced for the Wii U, with a planned release date of October 15, 2015. It’s interesting to note that the European Wii U version of 'Human Resource Machine' was slated for a slightly later release, a common occurrence back then. We also have glimpses of games scheduled for 2014, like 'Skylanders Trap Team' and 'PAC-MAN and the Ghostly Adventures 2' in October, and 'Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric' in November, among others. The Nintendo eShop for Wii U was also building its library with titles like 'Citizens of Earth' and 'Project CARS' appearing in late 2014 and into 2015.
It’s a reminder of how a console’s journey is shaped not just by its launch date, but by the games that fill its ecosystem and the community that grows around it. The Wii U, with its unique controller and ambitious vision, certainly carved out its own chapter in gaming history.
