It's always a tough moment in any season of Top Chef when the knives are packed and a chef has to say goodbye. For Top Chef: Houston, Season 19, the journey began with fifteen hopefuls, all vying for the coveted title. While the ultimate winner, Buddha Lo, was crowned on June 2nd, the path to victory was paved with many departures.
For those who might have missed the latest episode or are just catching up, the eliminations started right from the premiere. The very first chef to hear Padma Lakshmi utter those now-famous words, "Please pack your knives and go," was Leia Gaccione. She was part of the red team during the initial Quickfire and Elimination Challenge, which involved a challenging butchery task. Unfortunately, Leia was dealing with a bladder infection, which likely impacted her performance. Her top round steak summer roll just didn't hit the mark with the judges.
Following Leia, Stephanie Miller was the next to leave. The competition heated up with a football-themed Elimination Challenge. Stephanie found herself in a head-to-head cook-off against Jo Chan, and her feijoada with rice wasn't enough to impress. With neither team scoring a touchdown, everyone was technically on the chopping block, but Stephanie ended up being the sole Cougar in the bottom three and was sent home.
The third episode brought the first individual Elimination Challenge, where chefs had to cook for 100 people at their own night market. Sam Kang, tasked with creating Indian cuisine, presented a potato vindaloo he dubbed "Sam-aloo." While he made a strong impression with his confessionals, the dish itself was deemed lackluster, leading to his elimination.
Then came a double elimination, a first for the season. Chef Wylie Dufresne was in the kitchen to guide the cheftestants in creating two tasting dishes that looked identical. Robert Hernandez and Sarah were paired up, with Robert taking on a strawberry panna cotta. While the flavor was noted, the panna cotta's texture and shape didn't hold up, and his team landed in the bottom, sending both Robert and Sarah home.
However, the drama didn't end there. Ashleigh Shanti was brought back into the competition after winning a round of Last Chance Kitchen. This meant that Monique Feybesse, who had been eliminated previously, was the next chef to go home for good. Her elimination came after the challenge to create meals inspired by trailblazing women from Texas, where she drew inspiration from Barbara Jordan.
