Unpacking the Ultrasound Tech Salary: What You Can Expect to Earn

Ever wondered about the folks behind those incredible sonograms, the ones who use sound waves to paint pictures of what's happening inside us? They're diagnostic medical sonographers, or as most of us know them, ultrasound technicians. It's a fascinating field, blending technology with a deep understanding of the human body, and naturally, people are curious about the financial side of things.

So, how much does an ultrasound tech make in a year? Well, digging into the numbers, the Bureau of Labor Statistics, back in May 2014, put the median annual income for these professionals at around $67,530. Think of 'median' as the middle ground – half earn less, and half earn more. On an hourly basis, that works out to about $32.47.

It's also helpful to know where you fall within that range. The data showed that the lower 25% of sonographers were earning up to $55,850 annually (or $26.85 per hour), while the top 25% were bringing home $79,410 or more each year (around $38.18 hourly).

Of course, like many careers, where you work can play a significant role in your earnings. The Bureau of Labor Statistics does provide state-by-state wage figures, and it's no surprise that cost of living and demand can create quite a bit of variation across the country. So, while the national median gives us a great starting point, exploring specific regions would offer a more tailored picture of potential income.
