Unpacking Fortnite's Origins: When Did the Phenomenon Truly Begin?

It’s easy to get lost in the whirlwind of Fortnite’s evolution, isn’t it? With its constant stream of new Chapters, vibrant seasons, and now a whole universe of experiences like Lego Fortnite, Rocket Racing, and Festival, pinpointing a single "start date" can feel like chasing a Victory Royale in the storm.

So, when did it all kick off? If you’re thinking about the game that took the world by storm – Fortnite Battle Royale – that iconic mode first landed on September 26, 2017. That’s the date many of us associate with dropping onto the island for the first time, scavenging for loot, and building our way to survival.

But here’s where it gets a little more nuanced, and honestly, quite interesting. Battle Royale wasn't actually the original Fortnite. The game that laid the groundwork, the tower defense-style Fortnite: Save the World, actually launched a bit earlier, on July 25, 2017. So, in a way, the seeds of Fortnite were sown a couple of months before the Battle Royale craze truly ignited.

Now, if you want to get really technical, both of these dates represent the game’s early access period. Fortnite was in a prolonged state of development and testing for quite some time. The official, full release out of early access didn't happen until much later, on June 29, 2020. However, for most players, the early access period felt less like a typical beta and more like the game we knew and loved, especially as it entered its second Chapter. So, while June 2020 marks the official end of early access, September 26, 2017, is widely considered the true launch of Fortnite Battle Royale as we know it.

And the expansions keep coming! Lego Fortnite arrived on December 7, 2023, followed closely by Rocket Racing on December 8th, and Fortnite Festival on December 9th, all part of the massive Chapter 5 update. It’s a testament to how much Fortnite has grown from its initial concept into a sprawling platform for diverse gaming experiences.

It’s fascinating to think about how a game that started as a humble tower defense title evolved into this global phenomenon, constantly reinventing itself and adding new worlds to explore. The journey from Save the World to Battle Royale and beyond is a story in itself.
