Unlocking Google Maps: Why Alternate Routes Disappear and How to Find Them

It’s a familiar frustration, isn’t it? You’re heading out, punch your destination into Google Maps, and it spits out a route. But you know there’s a better way, a route that bypasses that notorious traffic jam or that stretch of road that always seems to be under construction. Yet, Google Maps, in its infinite wisdom, simply doesn't show it. I’ve been there, staring at my phone, wondering why my preferred shortcut, the one that shaves off precious minutes during rush hour, has vanished into the digital ether.

Google Maps is a marvel, really. It juggles a colossal amount of data – roads, real-time traffic from millions of us, even historical traffic patterns – to present what it deems the 'best' route, usually the fastest. But 'best' for the algorithm isn't always 'best' for you. So, what’s going on when those seemingly obvious alternate routes are nowhere to be seen?

Why the Mystery Routes?

Sometimes, Google Maps simply decides an alternate route is significantly longer or slower, even if you’ve found it perfectly fine in the past. If your preferred detour is currently snarled with heavy traffic or experiencing an incident, it might be temporarily hidden from view. But often, the culprit lies closer to home: your own settings.

Think about it. If you’ve told Google Maps to ‘Avoid tolls’ or ‘Avoid highways,’ it’s going to prioritize routes that fit those criteria. This can, quite naturally, hide alternatives that don’t align with your preferences. It’s like asking for a vegetarian meal and being surprised you aren’t offered the steak.

Bringing Back the Options

So, how do we coax Google Maps into showing us all the possibilities? There are a couple of effective ways.

Method 1: Clear Your Preferences

This is the most straightforward approach. If you suspect your settings are limiting your options, it’s time to reset them.

  1. Open the Google Maps app.
  2. Tap your profile picture in the top right corner.
  3. Select ‘Settings’.
  4. Scroll down and tap on ‘Navigation’.
  5. Look for ‘Route Options’.

Here, you’ll find toggles for ‘Avoid toll roads,’ ‘Avoid motorways,’ ‘Avoid ferries,’ and ‘Prefer fuel-efficient routes.’ If any of these are switched on, Google Maps is actively trying to steer you away from certain types of roads. Turning them off tells Maps to consider everything.

  • Avoid toll roads: Saves money, but can mean longer, slower journeys.
  • Avoid motorways: Takes you off the highways, often through towns and cities, which can be slower due to traffic lights.
  • Avoid ferries: Self-explanatory, excludes routes requiring a ferry.
  • Prefer fuel-efficient routes: Aims for the most economical journey, which isn't always the quickest.

By disabling these, you’re essentially telling Google Maps, ‘Show me all the paths, I’ll decide what’s best.’

Method 2: The 'Add a Stop' Trick

If clearing preferences doesn't reveal your desired route, or if you need to force Maps onto a very specific path, there’s a clever workaround: planning multiple stops.

  1. Instead of searching for your final destination directly, search for a location that lies along your preferred route. This could be a landmark, a specific business, or even just an intersection you know is on your way.
  2. Tap ‘Directions’ and set this intermediate point as your destination.
  3. Once that’s set, tap the three dots in the top right corner and select ‘Edit Stops’.
  4. Tap ‘Choose Destination’ and add your actual final destination as a stop.
  5. Tap ‘Done’ and start navigation.

Google Maps will now guide you to that first stop. From there, it will recalculate and guide you to your final destination, effectively forcing it down your chosen path. If your preferred route involves several deviations, you might need to repeat this process, adding multiple intermediate stops to guide Maps along your desired journey.

It’s a bit like giving a friend directions: sometimes you have to say, ‘Turn left at the big oak tree,’ to get them where you want them to go. And just like with a friend, a little patience and a few well-placed nudges can make all the difference in finding the perfect route.
