So, you're itching to explore Fossil Island in Old School RuneScape, huh? It's a fantastic place, brimming with opportunities to train a whole host of skills, from digging up ancient secrets to navigating treacherous swamps. But before you can set foot on this untamed land, there's a crucial step: completing the Bone Voyage quest. Think of it as your official invitation to the island.
Once Bone Voyage is in the bag, the initial way to get there is via the barge from the Digsite. It's a bit of a trek, but it gets you to the Museum Camp, the main hub on Fossil Island. Now, if you're like me and appreciate shaving off travel time, you'll want to unlock the dedicated Fossil Island teleport. This is where the Digsite pendant comes into play.
Here's the neat trick: use your Digsite pendant on the southernmost strange machine located inside the House on the Hill. This spot is north-east of the Museum Camp. Doing this unlocks the 'Fossil Island' teleport option directly on your pendant. It’s a game-changer, letting you zip right to the island without the barge detour.
And while you're exploring the House on the Hill, keep an eye out for a magic mushtree. These aren't just for show; they're part of the Mycelium Transportation System. It's a network of magic mushtrees scattered across Fossil Island that allows for quick travel around the island. The catch? You have to discover each one by walking to it first and attempting to use it. It’s a bit of an exploration challenge in itself, but totally worth it once they’re unlocked.
Now, what if you don't have a Digsite pendant handy? No worries, there are still ways to reach the Digsite, which is your jumping-off point. A Digsite teleport scroll is a quick alternative, zapping you south-west of the barge. Alternatively, if you're a fan of the gnome glider network, you can use a gnome glider to reach Lemantha Andra, which is also conveniently located south-west of the barge. For that, you might use a Ring of Dueling to teleport to the Emir's Arena in Al Kharid, or if you've tackled Monkey Madness II, a Royal Seed Pod to the Grand Tree can get you to a glider there.
Once you arrive, the Museum Camp is your first port of call. It might seem a bit bare initially, but with a bit of Construction skill and some materials, you can build it up into a much more useful base, complete with a bank. You'll need things like oak planks, iron bars, and nails, but the convenience is well worth the effort. You'll also find fossil storage crates dotted around, perfect for stashing all those ancient treasures you'll be unearthing.
From the Museum Camp, you can venture into the Mushroom Forest to the north-west, a hub for activities like Zygomite slayer tasks, Herbiboar tracking, planting teak and mahogany trees, and calcifying fossils. Beneath the forest, you'll even find the Wyvern Cave, but remember, you can only tackle those wyverns if they're assigned as a Slayer task.
Head south-west, and you'll find the Tar Swamp. This area requires a Rake and an Axe to navigate effectively, dealing with vines and aggressive tar monsters. Keep an eye out for Sulliusceps mushrooms, but be prepared to traverse the swamp to find them. There's also a rather damaging rubber cap mushroom launch that can send you flying, so make sure to fill the landing pit with mushrooms first!
And on the south-east side? The imposing Fossil Island Volcano awaits. It's a place filled with ash piles, hinting at the fiery nature of this ancient land. Each area offers its own unique challenges and rewards, making Fossil Island a truly captivating destination for any adventurer.
