Unearthing Stories: Your Next Adventure in Museum Communication

Ever felt that pull towards history, that whisper of ancient civilizations calling out to be heard? For many of us, museums are those quiet sanctuaries where the past comes alive. But behind every captivating exhibition, every engaging social media post, there's a team of dedicated individuals making sure those stories reach us. And right now, the Rijksmuseum van Oudheden (RMO) in Leiden is looking for passionate voices to join their ranks.

Imagine yourself immersed in the world of archaeology and ancient history, not just as a visitor, but as a storyteller. The RMO, a vibrant hub for Dutch antiquity and archaeology, is opening its doors for two exciting roles: a Medewerker PR, Marketing en Communicatie (PR, Marketing, and Communications Officer) and a Stagiair(e) PR, Marketing en Communicatie (Intern).

For the Medewerker role, they're seeking someone who's a bit of a Renaissance person in the communication world. This isn't just about sending out press releases; it's about crafting the museum's narrative across the board. You'll be part of a small, dynamic team working directly with the director, enjoying a refreshing level of freedom and autonomy in a flat organizational structure. Your days will be filled with developing and executing communication strategies, brainstorming creative campaigns for exhibitions and events, and ensuring those stories resonate with diverse audiences. Think online marketing campaigns, managing social media channels with a flair for engaging content, and even editing texts from others to perfection. They're looking for someone with practical experience in social media, online campaign purchasing, and a knack for using tools like Google Analytics 4 and Meta Ads Manager. A good eye for visuals, and perhaps even experience with video and photography, would be a definite plus.

This is a 32-hour per week position, starting August 1, 2026, initially for a year, with the very real possibility of extension and even a permanent contract. The salary is in line with the Museum Collective Labour Agreement, depending on your experience and age, up to scale 10.

And for those just starting out, eager to dive headfirst into the world of museum communication? The internship position is a fantastic opportunity. If you're a third-year HBO or WO student with a passion for communication and culture, or even a final-year MBO student who feels this is your calling, they want to hear from you. This is a chance to gain hands-on experience, enrich your CV, and contribute to a dynamic environment. The internship is for a minimum of twenty weeks, four days a week, starting June 15, 2026.

The RMO itself is a place where history truly comes alive. Home to a vast collection of 200,000 objects, including a world-class Egyptian collection, it's a place that celebrates the idea that antiquity belongs to everyone. They champion diversity and inclusion, recognizing that a variety of perspectives is essential for telling the rich stories held within their walls. It’s a place with an open, informal atmosphere where colleagues are deeply invested in the museum's mission.

If the thought of unearthing and sharing the stories of ancient worlds excites you, and you're ready to bring your skills and enthusiasm to a place that values creativity and connection, then it sounds like the Rijksmuseum van Oudheden might just be your next great adventure. Applications for the Medewerker role are due by May 15, 2026. You can find more information and details on how to apply through the provided contact points.
