UD Trucks: Navigating the Future of Logistics With Digital Security

The world of commercial transport is in constant motion, and UD Trucks, a name synonymous with reliability in the logistics industry, is right at the forefront of this evolution. You might picture their sturdy vehicles on highways, but behind the scenes, a significant digital transformation is underway, driven by the need for smarter, more secure operations.

It's fascinating to consider the sheer scale of change. The demand for parcel deliveries is projected to skyrocket by 50% by 2030, thanks to the relentless growth of e-commerce. This surge, however, brings its own set of challenges – think emissions and the ever-present driver shortage. UD Trucks sees a clear path forward through automation, connectivity, and digitalization, aiming to redefine what's possible in global commercial vehicle transport.

This forward-thinking approach recently saw UD Trucks become part of the Isuzu family, following a strategic partnership with AB Volvo. This move, designed to bolster their presence in overseas markets, also presented a unique opportunity to reimagine their digital infrastructure. As Mrs. Saritha Auti, Global Chief Information Security Officer for UD Trucks, explained, the separation from the Volvo Group meant a deep dive into identifying and securing the business processes and applications critical to UD Trucks.

"We took the opportunity to introduce a DevSecOps environment and ensure that our applications are free of exploitable vulnerabilities before being released into the production environment," Mrs. Auti shared. It’s a powerful statement, highlighting a commitment to building security right into the foundation of their digital tools. The idea is simple, yet profound: creating secure software code is the first, crucial step in safeguarding data throughout the entire business value chain. This prioritization of application security and DevSecOps isn't just a technical detail; it's a strategic imperative.

When you're dealing with hundreds of new applications and a highly security-conscious environment, you need robust tools and a clear strategy. UD Trucks sought a partner who understood the dynamic nature of cyber threats and could offer a unified approach across a diverse application landscape. We're talking about everything from legacy mainframe systems that keep manufacturing humming to modern Java and Windows applications supporting customer and supply chains. Even the over 2,000 robotic process automation (RPA) scripts on the factory floor needed to be covered.

It turns out, Fortify, now part of OpenText, fit the bill perfectly. "When we received the information on Fortify, we saw it met all our requirements and was clearly ahead of the competition," Mrs. Auti noted. A proof-of-concept confirmed its capabilities, and the strong product knowledge and local support offered by the OpenText team sealed the deal. This wasn't just about buying software; it was about forging a partnership to enhance their security posture.

What's particularly impressive is how OpenText's Professional Services stepped in to tackle the most complex challenges, even with 'black box' applications where coding insight was initially limited. By scanning the code with Fortify, they provided crucial insights and risk assessments. And to make things even smoother, OpenText helped integrate Fortify into UD Trucks' environment, paving the way for development teams to easily leverage scanning themselves.

Meanwhile, the UD Trucks security team embarked on the vital task of educating their internal application owners. Through workshops, they've been fostering a culture of security, emphasizing the importance of building robust code and teaching developers how to proactively avoid vulnerabilities. It’s a holistic approach, recognizing that technology is only one piece of the puzzle; people and processes are equally critical.

The result? A significant leap forward in application quality, leading to reduced maintenance costs and a more agile, secure development process. This shift-left approach, as Mrs. Auti put it, "paves the way for continuous application improvement and risk reduction." It’s a testament to how embracing digital security isn't just about protection; it's about enabling innovation and ensuring UD Trucks can continue to deliver value in an ever-changing world.
