They’re probably the first type of electric stove many of us ever cooked on, and for good reason. They’ve been around forever, and there’s a certain comforting familiarity to them.

When you’re looking at electric stove tops, the coil variety is often the most budget-friendly option. Seriously, the upfront cost is usually the lowest you’ll find. And they’re built tough, too. These things tend to last a good long while, and if something does go wrong, repairs are generally straightforward and parts are easy to come by. Plus, they’re incredibly versatile – you can use pretty much any kind of pot or pan on them, from your heaviest cast iron skillet to your lightest aluminum saucepan.

But, let’s be honest, they’re not without their quirks. Cleaning can be a bit of a chore. Those coils are notorious for catching spills and splatters, and getting underneath them to really scrub can be a pain. Heat distribution isn’t always the most consistent, meaning you might have to rotate your pans more often to ensure even cooking. And compared to some of the newer technologies out there, they’re not the most energy-efficient, and they can feel a bit… well, dated in appearance.

So, who are these coil stove tops best suited for? If you’re on a tight budget, or perhaps outfitting a rental property or a secondary kitchen where you don’t need all the bells and whistles, they’re a perfectly sensible choice. They get the job done, reliably and without fuss. They’re the dependable old friend of the kitchen appliance world, perhaps not the flashiest, but always there when you need them.
