We often talk about what's important, what we truly value. Sometimes, it's the end goal itself – happiness, peace, or a loving family. These are what philosophers call 'terminal values,' the things we desire for their own sake. But what about the things we pursue not because they're inherently wonderful, but because they help us get to those wonderful end goals?
That's where instrumental value comes in. Think of it as the 'how-to' of value. It's the value something has as a means to an end, rather than as an end in itself. It’s the tool that helps you build the house, the stepping stone that gets you across the river.
Consider honesty, for instance. While being honest can feel good in itself, its real power often lies in what it enables. An honest reputation can build trust, which is crucial for strong relationships and successful collaborations. So, honesty, in this context, is instrumentally valuable because it serves the terminal value of strong relationships or success.
Similarly, politeness. Being polite might not be the ultimate goal of your existence, but it smooths social interactions, making it easier to connect with others, get things done, and avoid unnecessary conflict. It's a social lubricant, valued for its ability to facilitate smoother journeys towards other desired outcomes.
Ambition is another good example. The drive to achieve, the desire to push forward – these aren't always pleasant in themselves. Ambition can be exhausting, even stressful. Yet, it's often the engine that drives innovation, personal growth, and the attainment of significant goals. Without ambition, many of the things we consider valuable might remain out of reach.
Even something as seemingly straightforward as being logical has instrumental value. Logic provides a framework for clear thinking, problem-solving, and making sound decisions. It's the bedrock upon which we can build effective strategies and understand complex situations, all of which are means to achieving various ends.
These instrumental values – honesty, politeness, ambition, logic, and even love when viewed as a means to connection and well-being – aren't just abstract concepts. They are the practical qualities and actions that help us navigate the world and achieve the things that truly matter to us. They are the essential gears in the machinery of life, turning towards our ultimate destinations.
