The Final Whistle: Predicting the 2024 College Football Playoff Landscape

The air is thick with anticipation, isn't it? Conference championship weekend has a way of shaking things up, and this year is no different. As we gear up for the official College Football Playoff rankings announcement on Sunday, December 8th, it's natural to wonder where everyone will land. I've been poring over the results, the head-to-head matchups, the strength of schedules – all the things the committee grapples with – and here’s how I see the final Top 25 shaping up.

It feels like Oregon has earned its stripes. An undefeated run through the Big Ten puts them squarely at No. 1, and honestly, who could argue? They've been dominant.

Then there's Notre Dame. They’ve had a solid season, and while that home loss to Northern Illinois might sting a bit, it doesn't seem to have derailed their perception too much. With a couple of teams ahead of them stumbling, I think the Fighting Irish will find themselves comfortably in the top tier, perhaps even ahead of a two-loss SEC champ.

Speaking of SEC champions, Georgia has been playing with fire, going into overtime in their last two games and pulling out wins. That kind of grit, coupled with an SEC title, should propel them up to the No. 3 spot. They’ve shown they can win under pressure.

The debate for that coveted No. 4 spot, and the final playoff berth, is going to be fierce. Texas, with their two losses to Georgia, and Ohio State, with losses to Oregon and Michigan, are right in the thick of it. While Ohio State boasts some impressive wins, the committee often weighs the quality of losses. I suspect Texas might just edge out the Buckeyes for that spot, even if Ohio State’s resume looks a bit stronger on paper.

Ohio State, landing at No. 5, is in an interesting position. They have that head-to-head win over Penn State, which is significant. However, being the third-highest ranked at-large team could mean a No. 7 seed in the playoff, which is never an easy path.

Tennessee’s win over Alabama was a statement, and I think the committee will value that enough to push them past Penn State, landing them at No. 6. They’ve earned their ranking with quality wins.

Penn State, despite pushing Oregon to the wire, might see a drop to No. 7. Their strength of schedule isn't as robust as some others, and with a loss in the championship game, it’s a tough spot to be in, likely meaning a road playoff game.

Moving down the rankings, Boise State’s conference championship win propels them past Indiana, who held the edge last week. It’s a testament to winning when it matters most.

SMU and Alabama are in a real dogfight for that final at-large playoff spot. While Alabama has the pedigree, SMU’s performance in the ACC Championship, even in a loss, showed enough fight. I think they’ll get the nod, proving that playing in championship week isn't necessarily a penalty.

Alabama, unfortunately, with three losses and not playing in their conference championship, will likely miss out. It’s a tough break, but the numbers just don’t add up compared to others.

Miami (FL) and Ole Miss seem to be locked in place, unable to improve their standing without playing. Arizona State, with their conference championship, moves ahead of South Carolina, but not quite enough to surpass Ole Miss, who has that head-to-head win over the SEC champion.

South Carolina will be ranked above Clemson, a direct result of their recent victory over the Tigers. Clemson, as ACC champions, still makes the playoff, but their non-conference schedule might cap their ranking ceiling.

Iowa State holds its position ahead of BYU, sticking to the committee's tendency to rank conference championship participants higher than those who didn't make it. BYU stays put at No. 18.

Missouri remains at No. 19, and Army’s conference championship win is a significant boost, launching them into the top 20. Illinois and Syracuse hold their spots, just outside the top 20.

It’s a fascinating picture, and as always, the committee has the final say. But this is how I see the final Top 25 unfolding before the playoff bracket is revealed.
