The Basics: More Than Just a Name, It's a Sound

You might hear the name "The Basics" and think, "Okay, so they play simple music." But if you dig a little deeper, you'll find that this Australian trio is anything but basic. Formed in Melbourne back in 2002, The Basics have carved out a reputation for themselves as a band that’s not afraid to explore, blending indie-pop, rock, reggae, and even electro-pop into a sound that’s uniquely their own.

It all started with Wally De Backer – who you might also know as Gotye – and Kris Schroeder. They laid the foundation, and by 2004, Tim Heath had joined, solidifying the lineup that would go on to become known for their relentless energy. And when I say relentless, I mean it. These guys are famous for their live shows, clocking in close to a thousand performances over the years. That kind of dedication, coupled with a healthy dose of humor, really shines through in their music.

Their discography is a testament to their prolific nature. Albums like "Get Back" and "Stand Out/Fit In" are just a couple of the records that showcase their diverse musical palette. You can hear the reggae and ska influences woven into their rock and pop sensibilities, creating something that feels both familiar and fresh. It’s this willingness to experiment, to pull from different genres, that keeps their sound interesting.

Interestingly, the members have also pursued individual projects. Wally De Backer, of course, found global success as Gotye. Tim Heath has been on tour with the band Blood Red Bird, and Kris Schroeder has released his own EPs. Yet, they always seem to come back to The Basics, proving the strength of their collective bond and creative synergy. Just recently, in June 2024, they dropped a new album, "Shiki," through Kuwo Music, showing they're still very much active and creating.

It's a fascinating journey for a band that, by name, suggests simplicity. But The Basics prove that sometimes, the most engaging music comes from a group that understands the fundamentals and then builds something wonderfully complex and heartfelt upon them. They’re a band that clearly loves what they do, and that passion is infectious.
