That 'Oops!' Moment: How to Unsend a Message on Your iPhone

We've all been there, right? You hit send, and then your stomach drops. Was that a typo? Did you accidentally send it to your boss instead of your best friend? Or maybe you just blurted something out in a moment of haste. Thankfully, with iPhones running iOS 16 or later, there's a little bit of digital grace.

It's called 'Undo Send,' and it's a lifesaver for those split-second regrets. The key here is speed – you've got a two-minute window after sending to pull that message back. So, if you catch your mistake quickly, here's what you do: just touch and hold the message bubble itself. You'll see a little menu pop up, and right there, you'll find 'Undo Send.' Tap it, and poof! The message disappears from your conversation.

Now, it's important to know how this plays out for the other person. If they're also on iOS 16 or newer, the message is truly gone from their device too. But, if they're on an older version of iOS, or if it's an SMS message (those green bubbles), the original message might still be there for them. You'll see a note in your transcript saying you unsent it, and they might still have the original. It's a bit of a digital handshake – you've tried to retract it, and the system lets you know the outcome.

And while we're talking about message mishaps, did you know you can also edit messages? For up to 15 minutes after sending, and you can do it up to five times. It's the same process: touch and hold the message bubble, but this time, you'll tap 'Edit.' Make your correction, and then tap to resend. The message will be marked as 'Edited' in the chat, and if your recipient is on a newer iOS, their message bubble will update. If they're on an older system, they'll get a new message with your corrected text. It’s a handy way to fix those pesky typos without having to send a whole new message explaining yourself.
