That Little Lightning Bolt: How to Tell if Your Phone Is Actually Charging

It's a familiar moment of mild panic, isn't it? You plug in your phone, maybe it's completely dead, maybe you're just topping it up, and you wait. But how do you really know it's getting that much-needed juice?

For most of us, when our phone is on and humming along, it's pretty straightforward. You glance at the top of your screen, and there it is: the little battery icon. If it's got that familiar lightning bolt symbol nestled inside or beside it, you're golden. It's charging.

But what happens when your phone has completely given up the ghost? That dreaded black screen stares back at you, and plugging it in doesn't immediately bring it back to life. This is where the real detective work begins.

When Your Phone is Completely Drained

If your iPhone or iPad has run out of battery so thoroughly that the screen is black, don't despair just yet. The key here is patience, and a little visual cue. First, make sure everything is plugged in correctly – the charger into the wall, and the cable into your device. Then, give it a minute. Seriously, just a minute. Often, a large battery icon will appear on the screen.

Now, pay close attention to what that icon looks like. If you see an empty battery symbol, and it's just that – an empty battery – it means your device is indeed charging and will eventually power back up. Think of it as a sleepy friend who needs a moment before they can fully wake up.

However, if you see an almost empty battery symbol along with a charging cable icon, that's a different story. This combination usually signals that it's not charging. In this scenario, it's time to double-check your cable, the power source, or even try a different charger altogether. Sometimes, those outlets only work when the light switch is on, a little quirk we've all probably encountered!

A Quick Peek at the Dynamic Island (and Older Models)

For those with newer iPhones, the Dynamic Island offers a brief, almost instantaneous confirmation. When you first plug in your charger or place your phone on a wireless charging pad, you'll see a quick flash showing the charging status and your current battery percentage. It's a fleeting glimpse, but it tells you everything you need to know.

If you have an iPhone 13 or an earlier model, you'll see a similar brief appearance of the lightning bolt symbol, usually to the right of the charging icon. After a few seconds, this will transition to the lightning bolt appearing inside the battery icon, confirming that charging is in progress.

What About Your iPad?

Good news! The same principles apply to your iPad. Whether it's on or completely dead, you'll be looking for those same visual cues – the lightning bolt in the battery icon when it's on, or the specific empty battery symbol (without the cable icon) when it's powered off and charging from a dead state.

Ultimately, understanding these simple icons is your best bet. It's one of those small, everyday details that, once you know what to look for, makes life just a little bit easier. And if, after all this, your device still refuses to cooperate, it might be time to consult the experts at Apple support or a trusted repair shop.
