Ever found yourself lost down a rabbit hole of distracting websites when you should be working, or perhaps you want to shield younger users from certain content? Blocking specific web addresses in Google Chrome is a surprisingly straightforward process, and thankfully, you don't always need to be a tech wizard to do it.
It really depends on what device you're using. For those on a desktop – be it a PC or a Mac – the easiest route is often through a Chrome extension. Think of these as little helpers you can add to your browser. Visiting the Chrome Web Store, you'll find a whole host of options. A popular choice is 'BlockSite'. Once you install it, you'll usually see its icon appear near your address bar. Clicking on it opens up a dashboard where you can simply type in the URLs of the websites you want to block. You can even add sites to your blocklist directly while you're browsing them – just click the extension's icon and select 'Block this site'. It's that simple.
Now, if you're using Chrome on your mobile, things get a little different. On Android, Chrome itself doesn't have a built-in way to block sites. This is because Chrome on Android is a standalone app, and your phone's system settings can't directly control it. So, you'll need to turn to a third-party app from the Google Play Store. Apps like 'BlockSite' (yes, the same name as the desktop extension) can do the job. You'll grant them permission to manage your phone's settings, and then you can add websites to their blocklist within the app. You can often set these blocks to be active all the time, or perhaps just during specific hours.
For iPhone and iPad users, there's a neat trick thanks to Apple's system. Because all browsers on iOS have to use the same underlying technology as Safari, you can actually manage website restrictions through your iPhone's own settings. Head to Settings, then Screen Time, and enable Content & Privacy Restrictions. From there, you can go into Content Restrictions, tap on Web Content, and then choose to 'Limit Adult Websites' or, more specifically, add individual websites to a 'Never Allow' list. This applies to Chrome, Safari, and any other browser you might use on your device.
It's also worth noting that if you want your blocked websites to remain blocked even when you're browsing privately (using Incognito mode), you'll usually need to adjust your extension settings. Most extensions have an option to allow them to run in Incognito mode, which you can typically find in Chrome's extension management page.
