As a national first-class museum, the Wenzhou Museum is the most representative comprehensive local museum in southern Zhejiang. Established in 1958, it was originally located at the picturesque Jiangxin Islet. After more than forty years of development, to meet the needs of cultural development in the new era, a new venue was opened to the public in 2003 on the west side of Century Square. In 2020, the Wenzhou Archaeological Institute (Wenzhou Dong'ou Cultural Research and Protection Center) merged with the museum and officially adopted a unified name as Wenzhou Museum, marking a new stage for resource integration and collaborative development in cultural heritage work.
The museum complex covers an area of approximately 26,000 square meters, with exhibition areas reaching up to 12,000 square meters. The main building features a closed single-body design inspired by the majestic peaks of Yandang Mountain—one of Wenzhou's famous scenic spots—pursuing an artistic charm that is both grand and simple. The internal layout is scientifically organized into three levels: there are dedicated access routes for disabled visitors on the ground floor; while floors two and three serve as primary exhibition areas.
