Roncalli High School: More Than Just a Building, It's a Community

Stepping onto the grounds of Roncalli High School, you might first notice the vibrant energy – perhaps a sports team practicing on the track, or students bustling between classes. But peel back that initial layer, and you quickly discover what truly makes Roncalli special: its heart. It's a place where faith, community, and a genuine commitment to student growth are woven into the very fabric of daily life.

For families new to Indianapolis, like the Kazmierzaks who moved from Georgia in 2024, the initial tour offered a glimpse of this welcoming spirit. "Many of the girls on the team smiled and waved at Hannah R'25 and Clara R'27," Emily Kazmierzak recalls. "That little gesture of kindness went a long way that day for two anxious girls." This immediate sense of belonging is something Roncalli seems to cultivate intentionally. Hannah appreciated the promise of a "real" high school experience, while Clara found her spiritual home in a Catholic environment that also supported her athletic pursuits in cross country, swim, and track. Even small gestures, like including Hannah's name on a senior shirt before school even started, speak volumes about the school's dedication to making every student feel seen and valued from day one.

This dedication extends far beyond the initial welcome. The counseling department, with individuals like Mrs. Jordan and Mrs. Beckwith, plays a pivotal role in guiding students through crucial life choices. "It became clear to me how much these teachers love their jobs, and it showed," says Emily Marten, another parent. "Passionate teachers make great high schools." This passion, coupled with a deep commitment to nurturing students emotionally, spiritually, and intellectually, is a recurring theme among those who have experienced Roncalli.

Maryjo Buckel, a former parent whose five children have all benefited from Roncalli's guidance, speaks to the school's enduring legacy. "My youngest Joe R'25 had as great of an experience as my oldest Danielle R'06 even though they attended Roncalli decades apart," she notes. "This tells me that you have been knowing, loving and serving my family and other families at the top of your game for too many years to count." This consistency across generations highlights Roncalli's ability to adapt and thrive while holding firm to its core values.

Roncalli's mission is clear: "Forming disciples of Jesus Christ through the intercession of Saint John XXIII." This guiding principle informs everything from academic pursuits to extracurricular activities. The school boasts impressive achievements, including being a four-time Blue Ribbon School of Excellence, with numerous academic All-Stars, National Architect Champions, and athletic state championships. With 25 student clubs and 15 athletic teams, there are ample opportunities for students to explore their passions and develop leadership skills. The fact that 89% of graduates attend college of their choice further underscores the school's commitment to preparing students for their futures.

Looking at the upcoming events, like the Spring Play "Radium Girls," the Alumni Mass & Luncheon, and the Day of Giving, it's evident that Roncalli fosters a strong sense of community that extends beyond the academic year. These gatherings, along with regular features like "Daily Prayer" and "Daily Announcements" in their video updates, reinforce the school's spiritual foundation and its connection with its students, alumni, and families.

Roncalli High School isn't just a place of learning; it's a nurturing environment where students are encouraged to grow in faith, character, and intellect, supported by a community that truly cares. It's a place that feels like home, even for those arriving from afar.
