Oblivion Remastered: Horse Armor Returns, a Nod to Gaming's Past (And Present)

It’s funny, isn’t it? How something that once caused such a massive uproar in the gaming world can now be brought back with a knowing wink and a chuckle. I’m talking, of course, about horse armor in The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. Remember that? Back in 2006, when Bethesda was riding high on the success of Oblivion, they decided to offer up some downloadable content. And their very first offering? Horse armor. It cost a couple of bucks, and for many, it felt like a slap in the face – a purely cosmetic item with no real gameplay benefit, yet it was being sold. It was, to put it mildly, a controversy.

Fast forward to 2025, and The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered has just dropped. And guess what? Horse armor is back. This time, it’s part of the deluxe edition, an extra $10 on top of the base game price. Along with new quests, weapon options, and digital goodies, you get… well, horse armor. Two sets, to be exact.

But here’s the thing: the reaction this time around is vastly different. Instead of outrage, there’s a general sense of amusement, even appreciation. We’ve become so accustomed to microtransactions and cosmetic DLC that the original horse armor scandal feels like ancient history. As one analyst pointed out, "Horse Armor walked so Battle Passes could run." It’s a pretty apt observation, really. We’re now living in a world where gamers in the US alone spent over $10.4 billion on digital add-ons in 2024.

Bethesda seems to be leaning into this shift, and frankly, it’s a bit cheeky and quite brilliant. By reintroducing paid horse armor, they’re not just selling a cosmetic item; they’re making a meta-commentary on the evolution of the gaming industry and player expectations. It’s a nod to the past, a playful jab at what was once a huge deal, and a reflection of where we are now. Many players seem to get it, finding it more humorous than offensive. It’s a reminder that sometimes, the most memorable moments in gaming aren't just about epic quests or powerful spells, but about the unexpected, the controversial, and yes, even the absurdly dressed horses.
