So, you're part of the UNSW community – whether you're a staff member or a student – and you need to get your email sorted. It’s a common quest, and thankfully, it’s not as complicated as it might seem. Think of your UNSW Outlook email as your digital hub for all things university-related.
Getting Started: The Web Approach
The quickest way to dip your toes in is often through the web. Just head over to the Outlook webmail portal. You'll need your zID, which looks something like z1234567@ad.unsw.edu.au, and your usual UNSW password. A simple 'sign in' and you're in. Easy peasy.
Diving into the Apps: Desktop and Mobile
Of course, many of us prefer having our email right there on our devices. UNSW supports using the Outlook app across various platforms.
- For Windows users: It's pretty straightforward. Open Outlook, and when prompted for your email ID, use that familiar
zID@ad.unsw.edu.auformat. Then, you'll pop in your UNSW password on the login page. - On a Mac: Things are a little different. Open Outlook, go to
Outlook > Preferences, thenAccounts. If you're setting it up for the first time, you'll enter your email aszID@ad.unsw.edu.au. You might be asked about redirecting to a new server – just tick 'Always use my response for this server' and click 'Allow'. If you had an older UNSW account set up, it's a good idea to delete that first before adding the new one. It just keeps things cleaner. - For your iPhone or iPad: Head to the App Store, download Microsoft Outlook. Once it's installed, open it up and enter your email address in the
zID@ad.unsw.edu.auformat. You'll be redirected to the UNSW login page to enter your password, and then just follow the on-screen prompts. - On your Android device: Similar to iOS, grab the Microsoft Outlook app from the Play Store. Enter your email as
zID@ad.unsw.edu.au, and you'll be guided through the UNSW login process.
A Note for Linux Users
If you're running Linux, UNSW approves Evolution and Thunderbird as your go-to email clients. You can find installation guides to get those set up.
The 'New' Outlook Experience
For staff, there's also the option to try out the 'New' Outlook. It's designed to give you a more integrated experience, bringing in features from other Microsoft 365 apps. Imagine having Copilot to help you craft clearer emails or seeing your Teams Group mailboxes right in your Outlook inbox. It’s worth exploring if you’re looking to enhance your workflow.
For the UNSW Alumni
And what about our alumni? You get to keep a lifelong zMail account, which is a separate service from the staff and student Office 365 accounts. It's web-based, managed by UNSW, and hosted on Microsoft's platform. You can create your zMail login at password.zmail.unsw.edu.au. If you forget your password, the Identity Manager is your friend. When logging into Outlook for your zMail, remember to use zID@zmail.unsw.edu.au and your Microsoft password. A little tip: it’s best to sign out of other Office 365 services or use an incognito window to avoid any login mix-ups.
A Few Friendly Reminders
- Stay Updated: Keep an eye on your UNSW inbox for important announcements.
- Security First: Access your email on UNSW-managed devices whenever possible, and be mindful of who you share data with.
- Forwarding Caution: Be very careful with automatic email forwarding rules. Sending sensitive university data to external accounts can create security risks and potential liabilities.
- Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA): You'll likely encounter MFA when signing in. It's an extra layer of security, and it's good to be prepared for it.
- New Students: If you've just accepted your offer and can't access your email yet, don't worry. You usually need to be enrolled in at least one subject, and it can take up to 48 hours after enrolling for access to kick in.
Getting your email set up is a key step in staying connected. Hopefully, this guide makes that process a little smoother for you.
