Navigating Your Path at Texas A&M: Understanding the TAP and Fish Forms for Major Changes

Thinking about a change of scenery in your academic journey at Texas A&M? It's a common feeling, and thankfully, there are specific pathways designed to help you navigate these transitions. For students looking to switch their major, understanding the Transition Academic Programs (TAP) and Fish Form processes is key.

Let's break it down. If you've already spent at least one semester at Texas A&M (whether on the College Station, Galveston, or McAllen campuses) and you're realizing your initial major isn't quite the right fit, the TAP Application is likely your next step. It's important to know that this application has specific opening and closing dates – mark your calendars for March 4th at 8 AM to August 19th at 11:59 PM. And a crucial point: please steer clear of the Howdy Portal for this; it's not the route for TAP applications.

Before you even think about filling out the TAP form, a visit with a TAP Advisor is a must. They're there to chat through your change of major plans, ensuring you're making an informed decision. Once approved, your major will be updated to General Studies (GEST) for the upcoming semester. Just a heads-up, once that change is made, it's pretty much set in stone – it can't be reversed by the department. And if you're accepted, be ready to dive into a mandatory TAP Overview Virtual Presentation.

So, who is the TAP Application for? Generally, it's for students who are at least in their second semester at A&M, have had a change of heart about their career path, need to change their major, and have fewer than 80 completed credit hours. There are also special considerations for Corps of Cadets students on contract; it's wise to connect with Corps Scholastic Performance Specialists first.

Now, what if you're just starting out, or about to start? If Spring 2026 is your very first semester at Texas A&M (College Station, Galveston, or McAllen), the Fish Form is your go-to. This form also has its own schedule, opening on March 4th. Similar to TAP, avoid the Howdy Portal. The Fish Form is specifically for those first-semester students who've had a change of mind about their major or career goals since being admitted.

For those attending a Fall 2026 New Student Conference (NSC), hold tight! The Fall 2026 form will open after the 12th class day. Submitting the wrong form or submitting too early will only cause delays, potentially leading to your form being deleted and a request to resubmit. And just like with TAP, a major change initiated through the Fish Form is permanent. If you decide against the GEST major or get into another program, it's important to reach out to cancel your application. Again, chatting with TAP Advisors beforehand is highly encouraged.

After submitting the Fish Form, expect a review and processing period of about 7-10 business days. If approved, your major will be changed to General Studies (GEST) College Station for the upcoming semester. You'll be notified via email and guided on how to complete the mandatory TAP Overview Presentation.

There are a few nuances to keep in mind. Galveston first-semester students should know that the GEST major is primarily for those aiming for a College Station campus major, so expect to take classes there. If your heart is set on staying on Galveston for your degree, connecting with the General Academics (GACD) major on that campus is the way to go. McAllen students might also need to take some classes on the College Station campus depending on their intended major. And a quick note: Aggie Gateway to Success students don't need to use these forms as they are already in the General Studies major.

If you have any questions about these forms or the process, don't hesitate to reach out. You can contact the department at (979) 845-5916 or tap-gest@tamu.edu. They're there to help you find the right path.
