Navigating Your Health Journey: Unpacking My Health Record and Proof of Vaccinations

It’s a bit like having a digital filing cabinet for your health, isn't it? That’s essentially what My Health Record aims to be – a secure place where your important health information is stored and accessible. But like any new system, getting it set up and understanding how to use it can sometimes feel like navigating a maze. Let's try to clear some of that up.

Linking Up: The myGov Connection

Most of us will be linking our My Health Record through myGov. Think of myGov as the central hub for many government services, and linking your My Health Record is a key step to accessing it online. The process often relies on your Medicare details to confirm it's really you. If you already have a Medicare online account linked to your myGov account, it’s usually a smoother ride. You'll likely just tick a box saying 'Use my Medicare identity,' and you're good to go.

Now, if you don't have a Medicare online account, or prefer not to link it, that's okay too. The system will then ask you some questions to verify your identity using your Medicare information. This could be about your Medicare card, bank details registered with Medicare, or even details from your recent Medicare claims – like the date and location of your last doctor's visit. It’s really important that these details match what Medicare has on file. If you're unsure about any of this, a quick call to Medicare on 132 011 can sort things out. They can even help you set up a Medicare online account and provide a linking code.

For those who aren't eligible for Medicare, the path is a little different but still achievable. Once you've applied for a My Health Record and received your identity verification code, you'll still link it to your myGov account. The reference material points to a specific step on a page for this, so it’s worth checking that out if you fall into this category.

Proof of Vaccinations: Your COVID-19 and Flu Records

In recent times, having easy access to proof of vaccinations has become incredibly important. My Health Record can help with this, particularly for your COVID-19 and flu immunisations. There are a couple of key documents you can get:

  • Complete Immunisation History Statement: This is the comprehensive one, showing all the immunisations recorded on the Australian Immunisation Register (AIR) that you've had.
  • COVID-19 and Influenza Immunisation History Statement: This is more specific, focusing only on your COVID-19 and flu vaccinations. Interestingly, you can get this statement even if you haven't had any of these vaccinations yet – it will just show them as blank.

For these statements to appear, your vaccination provider needs to report your vaccination details to the AIR. So, if you've had a jab but it's not showing up, that's likely the reason.

Getting Proof for Others and Alternative Routes

What if you need proof of vaccination for someone else, like a child? If you're their authorised or nominated representative, you can access their records through My Health Record.

If you have a My Health Record already, getting your COVID-19 and flu statement is straightforward from within your record. If you have Medicare online access through myGov, you can also get this statement there.

But what if you're not eligible for Medicare and don't receive a DVA pension or benefit? You'll need an Individual Healthcare Identifier (IHI) first. You can apply for this online. Once you have your IHI, you can access your COVID-19 and flu immunisation history statement through the IHI service in myGov.

If, for any reason, you can't get your COVID-19 vaccination proof online, don't despair. The Australian Immunisation Register is there to help. You can give them a call on 1800 653 809 during business hours, and they can assist you further. It’s good to know there are always backup options.
