Ever feel like you're juggling a dozen digital keys just to get through your day? In the world of university life, especially at Western, managing your online identity can feel a bit like that. That's where the Western Identity Manager steps in, acting as your central hub for all things related to your digital access.
Think of it as your personal digital concierge. Need to change that password you’ve been using since your first day? The Identity Manager is your go-to. It’s a straightforward process, really. You’ll head over to identity.uwo.ca, log in with your current credentials (and if those have slipped your mind, there are always instructions for resetting them), and then navigate to the security tab. From there, it’s just a matter of selecting ‘Change My Password,’ entering your new, hopefully more memorable, password twice, and clicking ‘Change Password.’ A quick logout and log back in, especially if you’re logged into your workstation, is usually a good idea to make sure everything syncs up smoothly.
But it's not just about passwords. This system is also fundamental to securing your access to essential services. For instance, when you're looking to get your university email set up on your iPhone or iPad, the Identity Manager plays a role in that authentication process. You'll be guided through adding an account, selecting 'Exchange,' entering your Western email, and then signing in with your password. It’s all about ensuring that only you can access your important communications.
Beyond just passwords and email, the Identity Manager is intrinsically linked to your access to crucial systems like My Human Resources (My HR). To even get started with My HR, a few things need to fall into place. Your appointment needs to be recorded, your User ID assigned, and crucially, you need to have activated your User ID and password – your Western Identity. This activation is a one-time step when you first get your credentials, and it’s done through the Identity Manager itself.
And speaking of security, you’ve likely heard about Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA). It’s become a standard, and for good reason. MFA adds that extra layer of protection, combining something you know (your password) with something you have (like your phone). For accessing My HR, MFA isn't optional; it's mandatory. Setting it up is a one-time process, usually done via the WTS website, and it means you'll need your authentication device every time you log in. This is also true for Office 365, which includes your email. So, if you ever run into an error message saying you're not enrolled, it’s a clear sign that you need to go through the MFA setup process. It’s a small step that significantly boosts your digital security.
Sometimes, you might even find yourself with two Western Identities. If that’s the case, remember that MFA is mandatory for both Office 365 and My HR, so you’ll need to set it up for each identity to access these systems. It might seem like a lot of steps initially, but once it’s all set up, it creates a more secure and streamlined experience for navigating your digital life at Western.
