A Greener Future for Road Transport
Starting January 1, 2025, a significant change comes into play: new registrations for diesel and diesel-natural gas cars and taxis will be phased out. By 2030, the expectation is that all new car and taxi registrations will be for models running on cleaner energy, like electric or hybrid vehicles. Don't worry if you already own a diesel vehicle registered before this date; renewals for your Certificate of Entitlement (COE) will still be permitted.
Two Paths to Registration
When it comes to registering your vehicle, you generally have two main avenues:

Through a Motor Dealer: This is often the most straightforward route for many. Since August 28, 2023, if your motor dealer handles the registration, you'll need to log in to the OneMotoring portal using your Singpass 2FA. This is where you'll provide your consent and authorization to proceed with the registration. Your dealer will then manage the application and payment on your behalf.

Self-Registration at the LTA Customer Service Centre: If you prefer to handle things yourself, perhaps for a unique import or a specific personal preference, you can opt for self-registration. This involves a few more steps:
- Step 1: Apply for a Vehicle Approval Code (VAC): This is done through the Vehicle Inspection and Type Approval System (VITAS). Before you even apply for the VAC, make sure you have all the necessary documents for importing and registering your specific vehicle type. You'll need to pay an application fee for the VAC, which varies depending on the vehicle type. Once you get in-principle approval, the vehicle will need to pass an inspection at an LTA-Authorised Inspection Centre (AIC) before the VAC is issued.
- Step 2: Submit Prerequisite Documents: With your VAC in hand, you'll need to book an appointment at the LTA Customer Service Centre. Here, you'll submit various forms, like Form R01 for normal vehicles or R01A for off-peak cars, along with identification documents for the owner. If you're registering as an individual, it's your NRIC or relevant pass. For companies, it's a business profile from ACRA and identification for the authorized person, possibly with an authorization letter.
- Step 3: Pay Registration Fees and Charges: Naturally, there are fees involved in the registration process.
- Step 4: Affix and Seal Registration Number Plates: Once everything is approved, you'll get your registration number plates. These need to be properly affixed to your vehicle.
- Step 5: Display Side Markings (if required): Certain vehicles might also require specific side markings.
