Navigating the Digital Birthday: How to Update Your Date of Birth on Facebook

It’s funny, isn’t it? How many of us would actually remember each other’s birthdays without a little nudge from social media? Facebook, for better or worse, has become our collective calendar for celebrating milestones. But what happens when that date isn't quite right, or you simply decide it's time for a change? You might be surprised to learn that updating your birthday on Facebook isn't as straightforward as you'd think, and there are a few things to keep in mind.

Why the Fuss About Your Birthday?

Facebook is pretty keen on keeping your birthdate accurate, primarily to ensure users meet the age requirements for the platform. When you first sign up, if you link your Gmail account, Facebook often pulls the birthdate associated with your Google profile. If you didn't use Gmail, you'd enter it during signup for age verification. This initial setup means your birthday is already in their system, and they've made it a tad tricky to alter it repeatedly, likely to prevent age misrepresentation.

The Step-by-Step Guide to Changing Your Birthday

Whether you're on your phone or your trusty computer, the process involves a few clicks and scrolls. Facebook doesn't exactly advertise this feature, which is why it can feel a bit like a treasure hunt.

On Your Mobile Device (iPhone & Android):

  1. Open the Facebook app and tap the three horizontal lines (hamburger menu) in the top right corner.
  2. Select ‘See your profile’ to navigate to your personal page.
  3. Tap the three dots located just below your name, next to ‘Add to Story’.
  4. Choose ‘Edit Profile’ from the options that appear.
  5. Scroll all the way down and tap ‘Edit Your About Info’.
  6. Now, scroll down again until you find the ‘Basic Info’ section and tap ‘Edit’.
  7. Here, you’ll see your current birthday. Tap on it to make your desired changes.
  8. Once you've entered the correct date, hit ‘Save’ at the bottom.

On Your PC (Web Browser):

  1. Head over to facebook.com and log in.
  2. Click on your profile name in the top right corner to go to your profile page.
  3. Under your name, click ‘Edit Profile’.
  4. In the pop-up window, scroll to the very bottom and click ‘Edit Your About Info’.
  5. On the left-hand side panel, select ‘Contact and basic info’.
  6. Locate your birthday under the ‘Basic info’ section and click the ‘Edit’ button next to it.
  7. Make your necessary adjustments to the date.
  8. Click ‘Save’ to confirm the changes.

What Happens After You Change It?

Don't worry, Facebook won't send out a mass announcement that you've updated your birthdate. The change is immediate on your profile, but it won't appear as a timeline post or directly notify your friends that you've altered it. So, you can make the change without any awkward social ripple effects.

The Three-Time Rule (and Beyond)

Facebook does keep a tally. You're generally allowed to change your birthday a maximum of three times. After that, the platform might get a bit suspicious. If you find yourself needing to make a change beyond those three instances, you'll have to go through Facebook's official request process. It’s not guaranteed, but it’s the only avenue available if you've hit the limit.

Taking Control: Hiding Your Birthday

If you'd rather not have your birthday displayed prominently, or you want to control who sees it, you can adjust the privacy settings. By default, it might be visible to ‘Friends of Friends,’ meaning even people you don't know directly but who share a mutual connection can see it. You have options: make it public, visible only to friends, close friends, or even just yourself. To do this, you'll navigate back to that ‘Edit birthday’ page we discussed earlier, and right beside the birthday field, you'll find audience settings where you can make your selection.
