Navigating the AI Label: Instagram's Evolving Stance on Generated Content in 2024

It’s a question that’s becoming increasingly common as we scroll through our feeds: is that stunning landscape, that perfectly posed portrait, or even that viral soundbite, actually real? The line between human creativity and artificial intelligence is blurring, and platforms like Instagram are grappling with how to keep us informed.

Back in February 2024, Meta, the parent company of Instagram and Facebook, announced a significant shift in its approach to AI-generated content. This wasn't just a minor tweak; it was a move to address the growing concerns around AI fakery, a concern that, sadly, came too late for some, like the individual who lost a substantial amount of money after being duped by an AI-powered scam featuring a celebrity figure.

The core of this new policy revolves around labeling. Meta began rolling out a feature that places a text label above photos and videos where AI has played a role. This label signifies that the content has been generated or manipulated by AI, whether it's a completely fabricated image or just a partially altered one. It’s a proactive step, aiming to prevent future instances of AI being used to deceive.

But as with many evolving technologies, Meta’s policy wasn't set in stone. Throughout 2024, the company continued to refine its approach. A detailed blog post in April elaborated on their strategy for labeling AI-generated content and manipulated media, signaling a commitment to transparency. This wasn't a one-off announcement; it was an ongoing process of adaptation.

Initially, the plan, announced in May, was to apply "Made with AI" labels to AI-generated videos, images, and audio. This was an expansion from their previous, more limited policy that focused on a narrow category of doctored videos. Monika Bickert, Meta's Vice President of Content Policy, highlighted this expansion, emphasizing the goal of reassuring users and governments about the risks associated with deepfakes.

What’s particularly interesting is the tiered approach Meta is taking. Beyond the standard "Made with AI" label, they’ve introduced a more prominent designation for content that carries a "particularly high risk of materially deceiving the public on a matter of importance." This acknowledges that not all AI content is created equal in its potential to mislead, and some requires a more urgent warning.

This evolution is a stark contrast to Meta's earlier stance. Before this new policy, their approach was often to delete content that violated their 'manipulated media' policy, especially videos that made individuals appear to say or do things they hadn't. The new strategy, however, allows such content to remain online, provided it's clearly labeled. This shift reflects the increasing prevalence and sophistication of AI tools, making outright deletion less feasible and labeling a more practical solution.

It's a complex landscape, and Meta isn't the only one navigating it. Globally, regulators are also stepping in. China, for instance, has been developing its own regulations to standardize AI-generated content labeling, focusing on national security and public interests. Their draft rules, released in September 2024, mandate explicit labels embedded in files and require platforms to regulate the spread of AI-generated materials.
