A recent poll of 1,250 UK undergraduates paints a fascinating picture of how they're actually using these powerful generative AI tools, and what they expect from their institutions.
What's striking is just how many students are already integrating AI into their academic lives. More than half, a solid 53%, have used generative AI to help with their assessments. The most popular role? An 'AI private tutor,' with 36% using it to get a better handle on complex concepts. It's like having a patient, always-available study buddy, ready to explain things in a new way.
Now, when it comes to actually submitting work, the picture gets a bit more nuanced. While 13% admit to using AI to generate text for their assignments, the vast majority of them (most of that 13%) are carefully editing the output. Only a tiny fraction, about 5%, are just copying and pasting without a second thought. This suggests a general understanding, or at least a cautious approach, to academic integrity.
But it's not all smooth sailing. A significant chunk of students, 35%, are still in the dark about how often AI tools invent facts, statistics, or citations – those pesky 'hallucinations' that can derail an otherwise good piece of work. This highlights a real need for education on AI's limitations.
Interestingly, the study points to a potential 'digital divide' in AI usage. Students from more privileged backgrounds are slightly more likely to use AI for assessments than those from less privileged backgrounds. There are also differences based on ethnicity and gender, with Asian students and male students reporting higher usage rates. This is something universities will need to keep an eye on to ensure equitable access and benefit.
When asked about what's acceptable, a clear consensus emerges. Most students (66%) find it perfectly fine to use AI for explaining concepts, 54% for brainstorming research ideas, and 53% for summarizing articles. However, the idea of submitting unedited AI-generated text in assessments? Only a mere 3% think that's okay.
On the institutional front, most students (63%) believe their university has a clear policy on AI, and a majority (65%) are confident their institution could detect AI-generated work. Yet, the actual assessment methods haven't seen much upheaval; only 9% of students feel their assessments have changed 'significantly,' with a quarter saying they've stayed exactly the same.
What students really want, though, is for their institutions to step up and provide AI tools. A good 30% agree their university should offer these resources, but only 9% report that they currently do. And when it comes to support, only about a fifth of students feel satisfied with what they've received, leaving a large number feeling neutral or unsure.
Looking ahead, the expectation is that AI will be a constant companion. Nearly three-quarters (73%) anticipate using AI after graduation, primarily for tasks like translation, enhancing written content, and summarizing. Generating text, interestingly, is a less anticipated use for the future.
So, what's the takeaway? The message from students is clear: they're using AI, they see its potential, but they also want guidance and support. Universities are urged to develop transparent policies, teach students how to use AI effectively and critically, and ensure equitable access to these tools. The future of learning is undoubtedly intertwined with AI, and higher education needs to proactively shape that relationship.
