The buzz around AI in content creation and SEO is practically deafening these days, isn't it? As we step into 2025, it feels like everyone's got an opinion. Some folks are convinced AI churns out mediocre stuff unless you're a prompt engineering wizard, making you wonder if it's even worth the hassle compared to just doing it yourself or hiring a human expert. Then there are those who see AI as an invaluable co-pilot, a way to supercharge productivity and scale those ever-important SEO strategies.
Our approach? Well, we believe you truly don't know until you dive in and try. Being serial early adopters, we've found that the best way to get a handle on these AI SEO tools is to put them through their paces ourselves. So, we've been busy testing out a handful of them – a mix of free and paid, the household names and some of the quieter contenders – to see how they really stack up.
How We Tested the Waters
It's fair to say we've got a bit more history with some of these tools than others. For instance, ChatGPT, Semrush, and Clearscope have been part of our regular toolkit for a good few years now. The others? They were fresh faces for us as we started working on this guide. But, we approached each one with the mindset of a brand-new user, or someone just dipping their toes into the SEO waters. So, what did we look for? We focused on the key features – not just how many, but how unique they are. Pricing and the different plans available were obviously crucial. We also jotted down the pros and cons from the perspective of someone actually working in SEO content marketing. User experience, and my own subjective take on it after testing, played a big role. And, of course, we glanced at what third-party users are saying.
ChatGPT: The Brainstorming Buddy
Most of us who work with technology have probably heard of ChatGPT. Launched by OpenAI back in 2022, it's essentially a generative AI chatbot designed to lend a hand with all sorts of everyday tasks, just by answering your questions or following your prompts. OpenAI pitches it as an assistant for writing, learning, and, crucially for us, brainstorming. In the SEO realm, ChatGPT can be a real help with suggesting on-page optimization tweaks, offering off-page strategies, and even helping you unearth content keywords and map out topic clusters.
Its interface is wonderfully straightforward – a simple chatbot that's a breeze to use. The memory feature is a neat trick, allowing it to recall specific details across chats, like your brand guidelines or a strategic roadmap. And the 'Projects' functionality is a godsend for organization, letting you bundle instructions and share project files across different conversations. Plus, OpenAI is constantly refining the learning models, so it's always getting smarter.
When it comes to pricing, there's a free tier that gives you access to GPT-4o mini, though it comes with limits on file uploads, advanced data analysis, web browsing, and image generation. For $20 a month, the Plus plan unlocks more extended limits and some access to the advanced reasoning 'o1' model, plus the ability to create custom GPTs. If you're looking for unlimited access to available models and higher limits for things like Sora video generation, the Pro plan is $200 a month. And for teams, there's a Team plan at $25 per user per month (billed annually) or $30 per month (billed monthly), which is similar to Plus but adds an admin console for workspace management. For enterprise-level needs, you'll need to contact sales for a custom quote.
From our experience, ChatGPT is incredibly user-friendly – pretty much anyone can jump in. Segmenting chats into 'Projects' really does keep things tidy. And it's surprisingly capable of tackling a vast array of tasks. However, it can sometimes 'hallucinate' or make up facts to fit a request, which is something to watch out for. While the free model is useful, for any serious SEO work, you'll likely want to upgrade to at least the Plus plan for better recommendations. We use ChatGPT a lot, both personally and for work, especially for brainstorming content ideas and shaping our personal brand's content strategy. We've tried using it to write SEO-optimized content directly, but honestly, the outputs haven't quite met our standards. They tend to be a bit surface-level and require significant editing to add real depth and value. It's an excellent assistant for generating initial ideas and topic clusters, but we always take those suggestions and refine them ourselves.
User ratings on platforms like G2 often place it around 4.7/5, which speaks to its broad appeal and utility.
