Navigating the AI Frontier: A New Code of Practice for Cyber Security

It feels like just yesterday we were marveling at the latest AI advancements, and now, the conversation is shifting towards something equally crucial: keeping these powerful tools secure. The UK government, recognizing this growing need, has rolled out a voluntary Code of Practice specifically for the cyber security of Artificial Intelligence. This isn't just another set of guidelines; it's a proactive step towards establishing a global standard, aiming to be integrated into frameworks like the European Telecommunication Standards Institute (ETSI).

Why the fuss about AI security specifically? Well, AI isn't just your average software. It comes with its own unique set of vulnerabilities. Think about 'data poisoning,' where malicious actors might try to corrupt the data an AI learns from, or 'indirect prompt injection,' a clever way to trick an AI into doing something it shouldn't. These are risks that traditional software security might not fully address. The Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT) has been listening, and a significant majority of respondents to their call for views agreed that a dedicated AI cyber security code was essential.

This new Code builds on existing work, like the National Cyber Security Centre's (NCSC) Guidelines for Secure AI Development, and is intended to be viewed as an add-on to the existing Software Code of Practice. It's designed to offer clarity to everyone involved in the AI supply chain – from the developers crafting the models to the operators deploying them. The goal is to ensure that AI systems are secure by design, right from the get-go.

The Code thoughtfully breaks down the AI lifecycle into five key phases: secure design, secure development, secure deployment, secure maintenance, and secure end-of-life. This comprehensive approach ensures that security isn't an afterthought but is woven into every stage of an AI system's existence. For those who might feel a bit overwhelmed, an implementation guide has also been developed, offering practical support to organizations looking to adhere to these new requirements. It's a collaborative effort, with the UK government planning to submit both the Code and the guide to ETSI, aiming for a globally recognized standard.

It's important to note who this Code is for. It's aimed at the stakeholders within the AI supply chain, including developers – whether they're working with proprietary or open-source models. If your organization creates an AI model and then deploys it, you're wearing both hats! And, of course, if the AI system handles personal data, those familiar data protection obligations still apply, so a peek at the ICO's guidance is still a good idea. Senior leaders also have a role to play in protecting their infrastructure and staff, as highlighted in DSIT's Cyber Governance Code of Practice. The aim is to make AI development and deployment a safer, more secure endeavor for everyone involved.
