It's a complex piece of legislation, and frankly, keeping up with the nuances can feel like a full-time job. We're talking about a 'long-arm' jurisdiction here, meaning the Act's reach extends beyond the EU's borders. If you're putting AI systems or models on the EU market, or if your AI outputs are used within the EU, you're likely in scope, regardless of where you're based. This includes intermediaries like importers and distributors, too.
The real meat of the Act lies in its risk-based approach. At the top are 'unacceptable risk' AI practices, which are outright banned. Think AI that manipulates people using their vulnerabilities, social scoring systems that lead to unfair treatment, or real-time remote biometric identification in public spaces (with very strict exceptions, of course).
