Navigating Rate Adjustments: What Peninsula Sanitation Service Customers Need to Know

It's not uncommon for essential services, like waste management, to experience shifts in their operational costs. Recently, Peninsula Sanitation Services, Inc. has been in touch with customers regarding a necessary rate adjustment. This isn't a sudden decision; it's a process that involves regulatory oversight and a clear explanation of the factors driving the change.

As of June 30, 2023, Peninsula Sanitation Services filed a request for a rate increase with the Washington Utilities and Transportation Commission (UTC). The company points to a number of factors that have impacted their bottom line since the last general rate increase was approved back in September 2020. These include rising costs for employee wages and benefits, the ever-fluctuating price of fuel, and the expense of maintaining and upgrading their truck equipment. They've also invested in additional capital assets, which are crucial for ensuring reliable service.

If the UTC approves the proposed rates, they would become effective August 1, 2023. For commercial container and can services, this means a slight increase per pickup. For instance, a 1-60 gallon cart pickup, which previously cost $8.95, might see a proposed rate of $10.65, reflecting a general rate increase of $1.43 and a dump fee increase of $0.27. Larger containers, like the 1-300 gallon cart, would also see adjustments, moving from $31.63 to a proposed $38.13.

The company's filing with the UTC, dated June 16, 2023, outlines the specific financial impact. They've requested approval for a general rate increase to cover new capital expenditures and these escalating operating costs. The proposed increases are broken down by service type: residential garbage service is looking at a $303,000 increase (15.72%), commercial garbage service at $186,000 (15.76%), and roll-off garbage service at $67,000 (15.71%). These changes would affect a significant number of customers – approximately 6,200 residential accounts, 900 commercial accounts, and 60 roll-off accounts.

It's worth noting that Peninsula Sanitation Service, Inc. has been operating for quite some time, with a founding date listed as July 1, 1980, in Washington state. Their core business involves the collection, transportation, and disposal of solid waste. While the operational address might show up in Texas in some business registries, their primary service area and regulatory filings are rooted in Washington.

Understanding these adjustments is key for customers. While no one enjoys seeing prices go up, it's often a necessary step to ensure the continued quality and reliability of services we depend on daily. The transparency in their communication, detailing the reasons behind the request and the specific figures involved, is a step towards maintaining that trust.
