It seems like everywhere you look these days, AI is making its presence known, and Google Search is no exception. You might have noticed a new feature popping up at the top of your search results – these are called AI Overviews. Think of them as a quick, AI-generated summary that pulls information from various sources to give you a snapshot of what you're looking for, powered by Google's Gemini technology. It's Google's way of trying to offer more concise answers, much like you'd get from AI chatbots.
Now, while these AI Overviews can be handy for getting a quick gist of a topic, I understand that sometimes you might prefer to see the traditional list of links, or perhaps you're finding them a bit overwhelming or even inaccurate for certain queries. The good news is, you have some control over this.
Turning Off AI Overviews in Google Search
If you're in the U.S. or the UK, or if you've opted into the Search Labs experience, you might be seeing these AI Overviews. For those who'd rather not have them, there's a way to switch them off. It's done through Google's Search Labs settings. You'll need to be signed into your Google Account in a regular Chrome browser window (not Incognito). Then, look for the 'Search Labs' icon – it often looks like a little beaker – usually found at the top of the page. Once you click on that, you'll see a 'Manage' option. Within those settings, under a section like 'AI Overviews and more,' you should find a toggle switch to turn AI Overviews off. Just flip that switch, and you should stop seeing them.
A Quick Filter for Specific Searches
What if you don't want to turn them off entirely, but just want to skip them for a particular search? Google has a neat little trick for that too. After you perform a search and see the AI Overview, look just below the search bar. You'll often see options like 'Web.' Clicking on 'Web' will typically filter your results to show only the standard text-based links, bypassing the AI summary for that specific search.
It's all about giving you a more personalized search experience. As AI continues to evolve and integrate into our daily tools, having the ability to adjust how these features work for us is pretty important. So, whether you want to embrace the AI summaries or stick to the classic search results, you now have a clearer path to manage your Google Search experience.
