Mastering Your Privacy: How to Disable Location on Facebook

In a world where our every move can be tracked, safeguarding your privacy has never been more crucial. If you’re like many users who enjoy connecting with friends and sharing moments on Facebook but are wary of the implications of location tracking, you're not alone. The platform gathers location data through various means—GPS signals when using the app, Wi-Fi connections, Bluetooth interactions, and even geotags in photos. While these features enhance user experience by suggesting nearby friends or events tailored to your interests, they also expose sensitive information about your daily life.

Consider this: each time you check in at a café or tag yourself at an event, you're painting a detailed picture of your whereabouts for anyone with access to that information. This could lead to unwanted attention from strangers or worse—identity theft and stalking risks. According to Dr. Lena Patel from Stanford University, controlling access to such personal data is fundamental for maintaining digital autonomy.

So how do you take back control? Disabling location settings on Facebook involves steps both within the app itself and at the device level across different platforms.

On Mobile Devices (iOS and Android)

  1. Open the Facebook App: Launch it and tap on the menu icon (three horizontal lines).
  2. Navigate to Settings & Privacy: Scroll down until you find “Settings & Privacy,” then select “Settings.”
  3. Go to Location Settings: Under “Audience and Visibility,” choose “Location.”
  4. Disable Location History: Tap on “Location History” and toggle it off; confirm when prompted.
  5. Turn Off Location Access: Return to main settings under “Apps and Websites,” select “Permissions,” then set ‘Location’ access for Facebook as ‘Never.’
    • Tip: Even if you've disabled location within Facebook's settings, ensure that your phone’s operating system permissions are restricted too!

On iPhone (iOS System-Level Settings)

  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Scroll down until you see Facebook; tap it.
  3. Select Location and choose Never. This will prevent any future access by the app altogether.

On Android (System-Level Settings)

  1. Go into Settings > Apps > Facebook.
  2. Click on Permissions, then select Location.
  3. Choose Deny so that all location requests are permanently revoked.

On Desktop (Web Browser)

nWhile browsing via desktop doesn’t actively track real-time locations like mobile apps do—it may still use IP-based geolocation for ad targeting purposes: n1.Log into Facebook through a web browser.n2.Click on the dropdown arrow in top-right corner > select 'Settings & Privacy' > 'Settings'. n3.In left sidebar click 'Your Facebook Information'. Here you can review stored data including any saved locations linked with ads preferences.n4.To stop targeted ads based upon geography navigate over Ads>Ad Settings scroll down till reaching 'Location', remove any cities or regions saved there previously.
