Mastering Your iPhone: Sending Texts on a Schedule

Ever found yourself thinking, 'I wish I could send that text later?' Maybe it's a birthday wish you want to pop up right at midnight, or a reminder you want to send to a colleague first thing Monday morning. Well, good news! Your iPhone can absolutely do this, and it's surprisingly straightforward once you know how.

While the iPhone doesn't have a built-in 'schedule text' button directly in the Messages app like some other platforms, there's a clever workaround using the Shortcuts app. It's a powerful tool that lets you automate all sorts of tasks on your iPhone, and sending timed messages is one of its neatest tricks.

Here's how you can set it up, step-by-step:

1. Open the Shortcuts App: If you don't already have it, you can download it for free from the App Store. It's pre-installed on most newer iPhones, so give it a quick look in your app library.

2. Create a New Automation: Once you're in the Shortcuts app, tap on the 'Automation' tab at the bottom. Then, tap the '+' icon in the top right corner to create a new automation. You'll see an option for 'Create Personal Automation.' Tap that.

3. Choose Your Trigger: This is where you tell your iPhone when to send the text. You have a few options:

  • Time of Day: This is the most common for scheduled texts. Tap 'Time of Day' and then set the specific time and date you want the message to go out. You can even set it to repeat daily, weekly, or monthly.
  • Arrival/Departure: You could also trigger a text when you arrive at or leave a specific location, though this is less common for simple scheduling.

For our purpose, 'Time of Day' is usually the way to go. Let's say you want to send a happy birthday message at 9 AM tomorrow. You'd set the time to 9:00 AM and the date to tomorrow's date.

4. Add the Action: Send Message: After setting your trigger, tap 'Next.' Now you need to tell your iPhone what to do. Tap 'Add Action.' In the search bar, type 'Send Message' and select it from the results.

5. Configure the Message: In the 'Send Message' action box, you'll see a few fields:

  • Message: Tap on the word 'Message' and type out the text you want to send. This is your actual message content.
  • Recipients: Tap on 'Recipients' and select the contact(s) you want to send the message to. You can add multiple recipients if needed.

6. Review and Finalize: Once you've typed your message and selected your recipients, tap 'Next.' Now, here's a crucial step for scheduled messages: you'll see an option that says 'Ask Before Running.' For a truly automated text that sends without you doing anything, you need to turn this OFF. You'll get a confirmation prompt asking if you want to turn off 'Ask Before Running.' Tap 'Don't Ask.'

Finally, tap 'Done' in the top right corner. And that's it! Your scheduled text is all set up.

A Little Note on iOS 18 and Beyond: Apple is always refining iOS, and with updates like iOS 18, they've been adding more intuitive ways to handle tasks. While the Shortcuts app remains a robust method, keep an eye on the Messages app itself for any new built-in scheduling features that might emerge. For now, though, Shortcuts is your go-to for this handy function.

It’s amazing how a little bit of automation can make your iPhone feel even more like a personal assistant, helping you stay connected and thoughtful without having to remember every single detail at the exact right moment.
