Making Connections: Your Guide to Adding Calls on iPhone

It's funny how something as fundamental as making a phone call can sometimes feel like a puzzle, especially when you're getting used to a new device or a new operating system. If you've just got your hands on a shiny new iPhone, or perhaps you're upgrading to the latest iOS 18, and you're wondering, "How do I actually add a call?" – you're definitely not alone. Let's break it down, nice and simple.

First off, the iPhone is designed to make staying in touch incredibly intuitive. For most of us, the primary way to initiate a call is through the Phone app. You know, that little green icon with a phone receiver on it? Tap that open, and you'll see a few options. The most straightforward is the 'Keypad' tab at the bottom. Just like an old-school phone, you can dial a number directly here. Once you've entered the digits, hit the green call button, and voilà – you're connected.

But what if the number you want to call is already saved in your contacts? That's where the 'Contacts' tab comes in handy. Tap on that, and you'll see a list of everyone you've saved. You can scroll through, or if you have a lot of contacts, use the search bar at the top to quickly find the person you're looking for. Once you've found them, simply tap their name, and you'll see their contact card. From there, you'll see their phone number(s) listed, with a little phone icon next to each. Tap that icon, and the call will be placed.

Now, let's say you're in the middle of a text conversation with someone in the Messages app, and you decide you'd rather talk. It's super easy to switch gears. While you're in the message thread, look at the top of the screen. You'll usually see the contact's name or photo. Tap on that, and it'll bring up their contact card again. From there, you can tap the call icon to initiate a voice call, or even the video icon if you're thinking of a FaceTime call.

Speaking of FaceTime, that's another fantastic way to connect, especially if you want to see the person you're talking to. You can start a FaceTime call directly from the Phone app (there's a FaceTime tab there too) or from the Contacts app, just like a regular phone call. You can also initiate one from the Messages app by tapping the contact's name at the top and then selecting the FaceTime option.

And for those times when you're on a call and need to add another person to the conversation, turning it into a group call? That's also straightforward. While you're on an active call, look for an option that usually says 'Add Call' or has a '+' icon. Tap that, find the next person you want to add from your contacts, and select them. You might need to confirm merging the calls, and then you'll have a three-way (or more!) conversation going.

It's worth remembering that iPhones are pretty smart about this. If you've recently called someone, they'll often appear in your Recents list in the Phone app, making it even quicker to redial. And with iOS 18 compatibility across a wide range of models, from the iPhone Xr all the way up to the latest iPhone 16 series, these core calling functions remain consistent and user-friendly. So, whether you're dialing a new number, reaching out to a saved contact, or switching from text to talk, adding a call on your iPhone is designed to be a seamless part of your day.
