You know that feeling? You've got your XDJ-RX3 all set up, ready to drop some beats, and then you remember – has it been updated lately? It’s a bit like making sure your favorite tool is always in tip-top shape, isn't it? Keeping the firmware on your XDJ-RX3 current is one of those simple yet crucial steps that can make a real difference in how smoothly everything runs.
So, how do you even know what version you're running? It's pretty straightforward. First, power on your XDJ-RX3. Then, give that [MENU(UTILITY)] button a good press for at least a second. This should bring up the UTILITY screen. From there, just spin that rotary selector until you find [VERSION No.] right at the bottom. Easy peasy. Once you've noted it down, a quick press of the [MENU(UTILITY)] button again will close the screen.
Now, for the actual update. The first thing you'll need to do is grab the latest firmware file. It usually comes in a zipped format, something like 'XDJ-RX3_v***.zip'. You'll need to unzip this on your computer. Inside, you'll find the actual update file, named 'XDJRX3.UPD'. Now, this is important: do not change the file name. Seriously, leave it as is. Next, you'll need a USB memory stick. Make sure it's formatted as FAT or FAT32 – think of it as giving your USB stick the right language to speak with the XDJ-RX3. Copy that 'XDJRX3.UPD' file directly onto the root directory of your USB stick. Again, no renaming!
Ready to get it onto the unit? Power off your XDJ-RX3. Make sure there are no USB devices plugged in, and no USB cables connected. Now, here's the key sequence: press and hold both the [USB1 STOP] button and the [RELOOP/EXIT] button on the right-hand deck simultaneously, and then power the unit on. You should see a message appear on the screen saying, "Connect USB storage device into top USB1 port." As soon as you see that, you can let go of those buttons.
With the XDJ-RX3 in update mode, it's time to insert the USB stick you prepared. Plug it into the USB1 port on the right side. Just a heads-up: don't put anything in the USB2 port during this process. The update should start automatically, and you'll see a progress bar keeping you in the loop. It'll also show you the current version and the version it's updating to. While this is happening, it's really important not to remove the USB stick or turn off the power. Patience is key here! Once it's all done, you'll see a 'Complete' screen, usually with a message like, "Firmware update is complete. Turn the power off/on before using." Just follow that instruction, power cycle your XDJ-RX3, and you're good to go with the latest and greatest.
It’s a small effort, but keeping your gear updated ensures you’re always getting the best performance and any new features that come along. Think of it as giving your XDJ-RX3 a little refresh, so it can keep up with your creativity.
