You know that feeling, right? You've got a few photos on your iPhone that you'd rather keep just between you and your device. Maybe it's a surprise gift you're planning, a funny inside joke, or just something you're not quite ready to share with the world. Whatever the reason, Apple makes it surprisingly simple to tuck those pictures away.
It’s not about creating a secret vault, but more like a private nook within your Photos app. When you choose to hide a photo or video, it doesn't disappear into the ether. Instead, it gets moved to a special album called 'Hidden.' This means it won't pop up in your main 'Library,' other albums, or even on your Home Screen widgets. Think of it as putting something on a higher shelf where it’s out of immediate sight.
For those of you running iOS 14 or later, there's an extra layer of privacy available. You can actually turn off the 'Hidden' album altogether. This makes those hidden photos truly invisible within the Photos app. So, if you want to be extra sure, this is a step worth taking.
And for those with the latest software – iOS 16, iPadOS 16.1, or macOS Ventura and newer – Apple has made the 'Hidden' album even more secure. It's locked by default, meaning you'll need to authenticate with Face ID, Touch ID, or your passcode to even peek inside. This is a nice touch, adding a bit more peace of mind.
So, how do you actually do it? It’s pretty straightforward:
- Open the Photos app on your iPhone.
- Find the photo or video you want to hide. You can tap and hold it if you want to select multiple items.
- Tap the 'More' button (it looks like three dots in a circle).
- Select 'Hide' from the options that appear.
- Confirm that you want to hide it.
And just like that, your photo is tucked away. It’s a simple process, but it offers a good level of privacy for those moments you want to keep a little more personal.
Now, what if you change your mind? Unhiding is just as easy:
- Open the Photos app again.
- Go to the 'Albums' tab.
- Scroll down to the 'More Items' section and tap on 'Hidden.'
- If the album is locked (on newer iOS versions), you'll need to use Face ID, Touch ID, or your passcode to unlock it.
- Tap and hold the photo or video you want to unhide.
- Select 'Unhide.'
If you've decided you want to take it a step further and hide the 'Hidden' album itself, you can do that too. Just go to Settings > Photos, scroll down, and toggle off 'Show Hidden Album.' This way, even if someone knows about the 'Hidden' album, they won't see it listed in your albums.
It’s good to remember that if you use iCloud Photos, hiding a photo on one device will hide it on all your other Apple devices signed into the same iCloud account. It’s all about keeping things consistent and private across your ecosystem.
