How to Keep the First Row Fixed When Sorting in Excel

When sorting data in Excel, users may want to exclude the first row or column from being sorted. To achieve this, specific settings need to be adjusted during the sorting process. Here’s how you can keep the first row fixed while sorting: 1. Select the table you want to sort, click on 'Data' and then 'Sort'. In the filter options, check 'My data has headers'. 2. By checking this option, the first row will not be included in the sort; if unchecked and you select it before sorting, it will be included in the sort list as well.

To keep the first column fixed when sorting: 1. Open Excel and select the column you wish to sort, then click on 'Sort' under Home. 2. In the pop-up dialog box, choose 'Sort within selected area', or use shortcut key ‘C’.
