How to Convert Text-Formatted Numbers to Number Format in Excel

  1. In an empty cell, enter the number 1 (as shown below) for use in the following steps; ensure this cell is formatted as a number. 2. Select this cell and execute 'Edit' - 'Copy' from the menu, or simply press ctrl+c on your keyboard. 3. Next, select the range of data you want to convert, such as cells A1 to A3 shown below; 4. After selecting the data, click on 'Edit' - 'Paste Special'; 5. The 'Paste Special' dialog box will open (as illustrated below); 6. In this dialog box, find and check the option for 'Multiply' under the 'Operation' section; then click ‘OK’; 7. Observe that a prompt symbol appears at the top right corner of your selected area; click on it and choose ‘Convert to Number’ from the dropdown options; 8. Now check if your text has been converted into number format successfully! Note: Numbers are aligned to the right by default while text is aligned to the left.
