Remember those early days of the internet, when you might have picked an email address that felt cool or funny at the time? Maybe it was inspired by a favorite character, a band, or just a fleeting inside joke. Fast forward a few years, and suddenly you're sharing that same email with potential employers, clients, or just people you've met in a more professional capacity. That's when you might start thinking, 'How do I change the name that shows up when I send an email?'
It's a common situation, and thankfully, Gmail makes it pretty straightforward to update the name associated with your emails. It's important to know that your Gmail name and your Google Account name are often linked by default, but you have some flexibility here.
Changing Just Your Gmail Display Name
If you want to update the name that appears when you send emails, without altering your main Google Account name, you can do that easily. This is the most common scenario. You'll need to use a web browser for this, as the mobile app doesn't offer this specific setting.
- First, sign in to your Google Account.
- Look for the gear icon (it looks like a cogwheel) in the top right corner of your Gmail screen. Click it, and then select 'See all settings.'
- Navigate to the 'Accounts and Import' tab.
- Under the 'Send mail as' section, you'll see your current email address listed. To the right of it, click the 'edit info' link.
- A small window will pop up. Here, you can type in the new name you'd like your emails to display. Make sure to tick the box next to it, and then hit 'Save Changes.' And voilà! Your outgoing emails will now show your updated name.
Updating Your Overall Google Account Name
Now, if you decide you want to change your name across all of Google's services – not just Gmail – that's a different process. When you change your Google Account name, it will reflect in Gmail and any other Google apps you use, like Google Drive or Google Calendar.
- Sign in to your Google Account.
- On the left-hand sidebar, click on 'Personal info.'
- Under the 'Basic info' section, you'll see 'Name.' Click on it.
- Here, you can edit your first and/or last name.
- Once you've made your edits, click 'Save.' This change will then propagate across your Google services.
What About Changing Your Actual Email Address (Username)?
This is where things get a bit trickier. Google generally doesn't allow users to change their primary Gmail username (the part before the '@gmail.com'). This is a security measure and also because usernames are unique identifiers. If you created your account when you were younger and now feel your username is unprofessional or just plain embarrassing, your options are limited.
Google does offer a way to check if you're eligible to change your username, but for most users, this option isn't available. If you have a G Suite account (now Google Workspace), your administrator might be able to help with username changes. For standard Gmail accounts, if you can't change your username, the most common solution is to create a new Gmail account with your desired username. It's a bit of a fresh start, but it ensures you have an email address you're comfortable with for all your communications.
Creating a new account is a straightforward process: head to the Google Account sign-in page, click 'Create account,' and follow the prompts to choose a username, set a password, and add any necessary recovery information. It's a good opportunity to pick a name that feels right for you now.
