Generative AI: From Academic Halls to Boardrooms, How Are We Really Using It?

It feels like just yesterday that AI was a futuristic concept, confined to sci-fi movies and research labs. Now, it's woven into the fabric of our daily lives, from drafting emails to conjuring up stunning images. Even the entertainment industry is experimenting with AI-generated short dramas, bypassing human actors altogether.

Naturally, the academic world isn't standing on the sidelines. Researchers across disciplines are increasingly integrating AI tools into their workflows. For those of us in the social sciences – sociologists, demographers, and the like – a fascinating question emerges: how are these professionals actually using generative AI, and what are their thoughts on this rapidly evolving technology?

Before diving in, let's clarify what we mean by 'AI' here. We're primarily talking about Generative AI (GenAI) – models designed to create new content like text, images, audio, or video. In social science research, text-generating models are currently the most prevalent. Typically, researchers feed these models a prompt or instruction, and the AI builds upon that to produce a response.

Who's Using AI, and How?

A study published in 2026 by Alvero and colleagues surveyed and interviewed authors from top sociology and demography journals. They analyzed responses from both computational social scientists (those whose work explicitly involves computer terms) and non-computational social scientists (often qualitative researchers or those using traditional statistical methods).

One might intuitively assume that computational social scientists, already comfortable with technology and code, would be the heaviest users of AI. However, the research revealed something quite surprising: the difference in AI usage frequency and attitudes between computational and non-computational scholars was remarkably small. For computational scholars, 'weekly use' was common, but 'never used' followed closely. Among non-computational scholars, 'used at least once' was the most frequent response, with 'weekly use' coming in second.

This suggests that while AI is making inroads, it's not yet a widespread phenomenon dominating social science research. When researchers broke down the different stages of a research project, the survey indicated that most scholars were still in the early stages of AI adoption across various phases.

Beyond Academia: The Corporate Landscape

Meanwhile, in the corporate world, the conversation around Generative AI is shifting from experimentation to strategic decision-making. A 2025 report by KPMG, surveying board members and senior executives, highlights that GenAI is no longer a fringe technology but a core topic in enterprise strategy and risk management discussions. Boards recognize its potential for efficiency gains, though translating this into long-term competitive advantage remains a work in progress.

The adoption is still in its nascent stages. While nearly half of organizations are experimenting with GenAI, only a small fraction (around 10%) have integrated it into their overall strategy, and even fewer (about 8%) have achieved widespread, scaled application. This points to a landscape where most businesses are still in the exploration and pilot phase.

Efficiency is the most immediate benefit, with many executives seeing clear contributions to productivity and process optimization. The potential for long-term strategic value, such as personalized customer service and enhanced competitiveness, is increasingly acknowledged, but the depth of application is still catching up.

Navigating the Risks and Gaps

However, this rapid integration isn't without its challenges. Despite over half of organizations having policies for 'responsible use,' formal governance structures, like dedicated ethics committees or independent review mechanisms, are often lacking. Key risks identified include data accuracy, privacy concerns, algorithmic bias, and security vulnerabilities.

Furthermore, a significant gap exists in talent and organizational capability. While the importance of GenAI initiatives is growing, the proportion of senior leaders and board members with deep AI expertise remains low. Insufficient training and capability development could indeed slow down the maturation of AI applications.

The 'Hallucination' Hurdle

One of the most talked-about issues, particularly for product managers, is the 'hallucination' problem – when large language models confidently present incorrect information. This can lead to customer complaints and product team headaches. As one perspective suggests, rather than solely relying on algorithmic fixes, product managers are focusing on managing expectations and designing user interfaces that acknowledge AI's limitations.

Strategies like clear disclaimers, confidence level indicators, and guiding users with structured prompts are crucial. For instance, instead of an open-ended search box, offering predefined queries or options can significantly narrow the AI's scope and reduce the likelihood of it fabricating answers. The shift is towards a human-AI collaboration, where AI acts as a draft generator, and humans provide the final review and approval. Think of GitHub Copilot's 'ghost text' – suggestions that appear subtly and only become part of the code when explicitly accepted by the user. This approach transforms the interaction from a 'turnkey' solution to a collaborative process, where the user remains firmly in control.

Open Source vs. Proprietary

Another layer to this evolving landscape is the debate between open-source and proprietary AI solutions. A survey by Linux Foundation Research indicates that many organizations are leaning towards open-source AI for its ease of integration and transparency. However, security remains a paramount concern for both types of solutions, acting as a significant constraint on adoption.

Ultimately, the journey with generative AI is still unfolding. From academic inquiry to boardroom strategy, the way we're using it is diverse, evolving, and fraught with both immense potential and significant challenges. The key seems to lie in thoughtful integration, robust governance, and a clear understanding of both AI's capabilities and its inherent limitations.
