Garmin Meets Google Maps: Your Wrist Just Got Smarter

Remember fumbling with your phone to check directions while navigating a busy street or a new trail? It’s a common scene, right? Well, Garmin is bridging that gap, bringing the familiar power of Google Maps right to your wrist. This isn't about replacing your phone entirely, but about making your adventures smoother and more hands-free.

Essentially, Garmin has integrated Google Maps functionality through the Connect IQ store. This means you can snag a dedicated Google Maps app and install it on compatible Garmin smartwatches. Once set up, you can leave your phone tucked away, receiving those crucial turn-by-turn directions directly on your watch. It’s a neat trick for anyone who’s ever wished for a discreet navigation cue without breaking stride.

Getting it up and running is pretty straightforward. You’ll need a compatible Garmin watch and an Android smartphone. The process starts by heading over to the Connect IQ store app on your phone, searching for “Google Maps,” and hitting install. You’ll need to grant the app the necessary permissions, and then it’ll queue up for installation the next time your watch syncs. A little notification on your watch will let you know when it’s successfully installed.

Setting your navigation preferences is also designed to be intuitive. The first time you open the Google Maps app on your phone after installing it on your watch, you’ll likely be prompted to configure settings. Alternatively, you can dive into the app on your watch, access the menu, and select ‘Configure.’ This is where you can allow location access and decide if you want navigation for driving, walking, or cycling routes to start automatically. You can also mirror navigation content to your Garmin watch from your phone.

So, how does it work in practice? You initiate your navigation within the Google Maps app on your Android phone, just as you normally would. As you start your journey, your Garmin watch will chime in with notifications for each upcoming turn. You can scroll down on your watch to see the next few turns, and by default, you’ll get a vibration to alert you – though you can switch that off in your watch settings if you prefer a quieter experience.

It’s important to note that this app is primarily for navigation display. It won’t automatically start recording your fitness activities. If you want to track your run, walk, or bike ride, you’ll need to start that activity separately on your watch, even while the Google Maps navigation continues to display. Once you reach your destination, you can then sync your activity data through Garmin Connect. It’s a thoughtful blend of convenience and functionality, aiming to keep you on track without pulling you out of the moment.
