From Suburban Illinois to a Political Powerhouse: The Early Days of Turning Point USA

It’s easy to look at the sprawling network and significant financial muscle of Turning Point USA today and imagine it always had that kind of presence. But rewind to 2010, and the story is quite different. Charlie Kirk, then just a teenager, was operating out of his parents' suburban Illinois home, launching what would eventually become a major force in conservative politics.

That spark of an idea, born from a feeling that existing conservative organizations weren't resonating with young people, began to take shape. Kirk himself often points to the presidency of Barack Obama as a catalyst, feeling that progressive ideas were too prevalent in his high school and that the conservative response was lacking. His first real foray into political involvement wasn't with his own nascent group, but rather volunteering for Illinois Senator Mark Kirk (no relation) in 2010, while still navigating his high school years.

The trajectory, however, shifted dramatically after a pivotal meeting with William "Bill" Montgomery. A retired Tea Party activist and marketing entrepreneur, Montgomery saw something in the young Kirk and encouraged him to leave college to focus on building something new. Within a month of their meeting, Turning Point was officially launched.

Montgomery proved instrumental, providing Kirk with crucial connections – a Republican rolodex and, importantly, access to potential investors. The very first check written to Turning Point came from Foster Friess, an investment manager and Republican donor. Kirk, just 18 at the time, pitched Friess at the 2012 Republican National Convention with a simple, earnest message: young people needed to hear the conservative message. Friess's $10,000 investment was the seed money that Kirk would eventually cultivate into a multi-million dollar enterprise.

Those early years weren't without their struggles. Kirk has admitted to nearly shutting down the operation multiple times due to financial constraints. Yet, fueled by that initial investment and a growing base of support, the organization began its ascent, laying the groundwork for the formidable entity it is today.
