It’s fascinating how a career in football can take so many turns, isn't it? You start out with dreams, maybe at a big club, and then the path unfolds in ways you might not have expected. Take Josh Wright, for instance. Born in Bethnal Green, he kicked off his professional journey at Charlton Athletic at just 17. But as often happens, the early years were a bit of a whirlwind of loan spells – Barnet, Brentford, Gillingham – giving him a taste of different dressing rooms and challenges.
These early experiences, though, they really shape a player. You learn to adapt, to prove yourself time and again. After his time at Charlton, he found a more settled period at Scunthorpe United, followed by a significant spell at Millwall. It was during his time at Millwall that he also had further loan spells, including a return to Leyton Orient and a stint at Crawley Town, before eventually making a permanent move back to Leyton Orient.
Then came a period where he really hit his stride, particularly at Gillingham between 2015 and 2017. He became a key player, notching up a good number of goals from midfield – 14 in 85 appearances is a solid return for a midfielder. After Gillingham, he moved on to Southend United and Bradford City, continuing to rack up appearances and contribute wherever he played.
His career then saw another chapter with Leyton Orient, where he played a significant role in their promotion push, and then a spell at Crawley Town before heading to Billericay Town. But the story doesn't end there. In 2022, he joined Ebbsfleet United, and it seems he's found a real home there. Not only has he been a player, but he's also stepped into management, taking the reins as manager of Ebbsfleet United. It’s a testament to his dedication and understanding of the game, transitioning from a player who graced many clubs to leading one.
Looking back, his career is a mosaic of experiences: youth international caps for England at U16, U17, U18, and U19 levels, over 500 senior appearances, and now a managerial role. It’s a journey that highlights the resilience and adaptability required in professional football, and it’s clear Josh Wright has embodied those qualities throughout his career.
