Fox News: A Look Back at the Conservative Giant's Journey

It's hard to talk about American media without mentioning Fox News. Launched back in 1996 by Rupert Murdoch, with Roger Ailes at the helm as its first CEO, it quickly carved out a distinct niche. From the get-go, it was known for its conservative leanings, a stark contrast to many other major news outlets at the time. Its initial slogan, "Fair and Balanced," aimed to attract a broad audience, but it resonated particularly strongly with Republican supporters and conservatives, becoming a go-to source for 24-hour news.

And it worked. By 2002, Fox News had surpassed CNN in viewership, a significant achievement. Its financial success followed, with revenues soaring far beyond initial projections, cementing its status as one of the most profitable networks in television. This success, however, also brought scrutiny. By 2009, the White House itself was publicly accusing the network of acting as a "propaganda arm" for the Republican party, especially concerning its coverage of economic policy and healthcare reform.

The network has certainly seen its share of turbulence. The departure of Roger Ailes in 2016 due to sexual harassment allegations was a major event, leading to a $20 million settlement with accusers. The slogan shifted, first to "Most Watched, Most Trusted" in 2017, and then to "Real News, Real Opinions" in 2018, reflecting a continued effort to define its identity.

Its role in political discourse has been particularly prominent. During the 2020 US Presidential election, Fox News was notably the first to call Arizona for Joe Biden, a move that angered then-President Trump and his supporters. This incident, along with others, led to a significant lawsuit from Dominion Voting Systems over the spread of misinformation regarding the election, resulting in a massive $787 million settlement.

While CNN briefly took the top viewership spot in early 2021, Fox News has shown remarkable resilience. Following Donald Trump's return to the presidency in 2024, the network saw its prime-time audience share climb to around 70% of cable news viewers, with a notable influx of former employees joining the new administration. The network has also been looking towards the future, striking a commercial AI data licensing agreement with Meta in late 2025. Its reporting has continued to be a focal point, with notable coverage in early 2026 including a report on a US military raid in Venezuela and an interview with President Trump about operations against drug cartels.

Fox News's journey is a complex tapestry of media innovation, political influence, and ongoing evolution. It remains a powerful force in the American media landscape, consistently shaping conversations and reflecting a significant segment of the nation's political viewpoint.
