It’s fascinating how some artists seem to just arrive on the global stage, fully formed and ready to conquer. Emilia Mernes Rueda, known simply as Emilia, is one of those artists. At 28, this Argentine powerhouse is on the cusp of a massive international breakthrough, and it feels like a story that’s been brewing for a while.
Born in Nogoyá, a quiet farming town in Entre Ríos, Emilia’s early life was far removed from the glitz of the music industry. Her father was a baker, her mother a cook. The closest thing to a musical influence in her family was her grandfather, a plumber who gifted her a guitar, sparking a lifelong passion. She started with music lessons, then moved to uploading covers on Instagram, and even joined a local cumbia group with friends. It was a dream she harbored, but one she genuinely believed was out of reach, given her humble beginnings. "I thought that dreaming of being an artist, of stepping onstage and being in that world, was impossible. Super far away," she’s shared. "I never thought I would be able to become a professional in this and be a singer. I saw it as impossible because of where I was from. The opportunities are usually in Buenos Aires..."
But life, as it often does, had other plans. Her social media videos eventually caught the right eyes, and her trajectory shifted dramatically. Fast forward to today, and Emilia is a bona fide star in Latin America, earning her first No. 1 hit on the Billboard U.S. Latin Airplay and Regional Mexican Airplay charts in 2024 with "Perdonarte ¿Para Qué?," a collaboration with the legendary Los Ángeles Azules. She even made history as the first Argentine act nominated for best pop vocal album at the Latin Grammy Awards for her sophomore release.
Now, the focus is firmly on global expansion. 2025 is shaping up to be a monumental year. She’s just made her debut at Brazil’s Carnival, performing "Bunda" with Luísa Sonza, a track from her upcoming EP. Plans are in motion for a spring tour across Spain, including multiple dates at Madrid’s Movistar Arena. And she’s spending more time in Miami, strategically positioning herself closer to her label, Sony Music Latin, and her manager, Walter Kolm. This move isn't just about proximity; it's about actively connecting with artists and producers from diverse territories, a well-trodden path to international success that artists like Karol G and Manuel Turizo have navigated before her.
"In Argentina, there are producers that I continue to work with and who are friends. I have everything there; it’s everything for me," Emilia explains. "But I made the decision to come to Miami for a while to work and try new opportunities. I’ll always be returning home anyway. I can’t let that go. But I think what happens at the industry level here in Miami is very big. You come across new artists and producers all the time. And it’s good to experiment."
Her versatility is a key ingredient in her appeal. Emilia has proven she can effortlessly move between reggaetón, romantic ballads, cumbia, Brazilian funk, and even vallenato, as seen in her collaboration with Silvestre Dangond on "Vestido Rojo." This adaptability is crucial for an artist aiming for international recognition. Beyond the music, Emilia’s visual identity is also making a statement. Her Y2K-inspired fashion sense, complete with denim mini skirts, bubblegum-pink hoodies, glitter stilettos, and signature diamond eye accessories, adds another layer to her persona. She embodies a confident sensuality, striking a balance between a sexy ingenue and the relatable girl next door. "I was always very outgoing, but I feel that today, I feel more confident with myself than ever. That took time, effort and therapy," she admits.
